Harcourt House Arts Centre is one of only four public galleries, and one of three artist run centres in Edmonton , Canada . The centre delivers a host of services to both artist s and the community, and acts as an essential alternative site for the presentation, distribution and promotion of contemporary art . Harcourt House Arts Centre is an artist run, charitable organization that promotes contemporary visual art to interested individuals and organizations by providing education, exhibitions and resources. The WECAN Society Where Edmonton Community Artist Network was incorporated in 1987 after forming the Artists For Tornado Relief , a successful art auction organized by Edmonton artists to help victims of the 1987 Edmonton Tornado. Following this event, the energized group of artists devoted their attention into creating a permanent arts centre. In September 1988 the WECAN Society acquired the Harcourt House buildings from the provincial government located at 112th St. and 102 Ave. in downtown Edmonton, where the facility is still located today. The Centre includes two public gallery spaces and as the single largest community of visual artists in Edmonton, it offers 42 low rent studio s for local practicing artists and other non profit arts related organizations. A unique area of programming to Harcourt House is the Art Enrichment program that serves over 25 local low income and special needs organizations with low no cost art education classes. Public gallery status and charitable status were granted to the organization in 1990. Harcourt House has received its core funding from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts , the City of Edmonton and the Edmonton Arts Council . Additional funding has been obtained from the Clifford E. Charles Harcourt real name Charles Parker Hillier 1838 1880 was a British actor. Harcourt was born in June 1838. After obtaining some experience by acting with amateurs, he made his first public appearance at St. James s Theatre , London, on 30 March 1863, as Robert Audley in a dramatic version of Mary Elizabeth Braddon s novel Lady Audley s Secret . In February 1866 he was seen at Drury Lane as Baron Steinfort in The Stranger, in January 1867 as Frank Rochdale in John Bull, and in March 1868 as Count Henry de Villetaneuve in The Prisoner of Toulon. He had engagements at the Royalty Theatre , at Strand, London the Strand , at the Charing Cross , 1872, and at the Globe in the following year. From Easter 1871 to Easter 1872 he was the lessee of the Marylebone Theatre . Some of the most important parts he played were Captain Absolute at the Charing Cross, November 1872 Claude Melnotte at the Haymarket Theatre Haymarket , May 1876 Pygmalion in the revival of W.S. Gilbert Gilbert s Pygmalion and Galatea at the same house, January 1877 and Count d Aubeterre in Proof at the Adelphi Theatre Adelphi , 1878. He afterwards appeared as Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet , a part which he acted with spirit and discretion, and of which after the death of George Vining he was the best exponent. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario for the riding of Monck electoral district Monck from 1879 to 1908. He was Ontario s treasurer from 1890 to 1899. He was born in Seneca Township, Haldimand County, Ontario Haldimand County , Canada West in 1849, the son of Michael Harcourt who was a member of the parliament for the Province of Canada, and studied at the University of Toronto . He was principal of Cayuga High School and served as inspector of schools in Haldimand County from 1871 to 1876, also studying law during that period. In 1876, he married Augusta H. Young, was called to the bar in the same year and set up practice in Welland . Harcourt served as deputy judge in Welland County, Ontario Welland County in 1886. In 1890, he was named Queen s Counsel . He also served as inspector of schools for Welland and the town of Niagara Falls, Ontario Niagara Falls . He died in Welland in 1932.
