  1. Marker (linguistics)

Unreferenced date December 2009 In linguistics , a marker is a free or bound morpheme that indicates the grammatical function of the marked word, phrase, or sentence. In analytic language s and agglutinative language s, markers are generally easily distinguished. In fusional language s and polysynthetic language s, this is often not the case. For example in Latin a highly fusional language the word amo I love is marked by suffix o for indicative mood, active voice, first person, singular, present tense. Analytic languages tend to have a relatively limited number of markers. Markers should be distinguished from the linguistic concept of markedness . An unmarked form is the basic neutral form of a word, typically used as its dictionary Lemma morphology lemma , such as in English for nouns the singular e.g. cat versus cats , and for verbs the infinitive e.g. to eat versus eats , ate and eaten . Unmarked forms e.g. the nominative case in many languages tend to be less likely to have markers, but this is not true for all languages compare Latin . Conversely, a marked form may happen to have a Zero linguistics zero affix , like the genitive case genitive plural of some nouns in Russian language Russian . 1. Design marker

In software engineering , a design marker is a technique of documenting design choices in source code using the Marker Interface pattern . Marker interfaces have traditionally been limited to those interfaces intended for explicit, runtime verification normally via instanceof . A design marker is a marker interface used to document a design choice. In Java programming language Java programs the design choice is documented in the marker interface s Javadoc documentation. Many choices made at software design time cannot be directly expressed in today s implementation languages like C Sharp programming language C and Java. These design choices known by names like Design Pattern , Programming by contract Design Contract , Refactoring , http java.sun.com docs books effective Effective Programming Idioms , http java.sun.com reference blueprints Blueprints , etc. must be implemented via programming and naming conventions , because they go beyond the built in functionality of production programming languages. The consequences of this limitation conspire over time to erode design investments as well as to promote a false segregation between the designer and implementer mindsets. Two independent proposals recognize these problems and give the same basic strategies for tackling them. Until now, the budding Explicit Programming movement has been linked to the use of an experimental Java research tool called ELIDE. The Design Markers technique requires only standard Javadoc like tools to garner many of the benefits of Explicit Programming . Such clear markers facilitate the correlation of Stratum strata , and used in conjunction with fossil floral and faunal assemblages and paleomagnetism , permit the mapping of land masses and bodies of water throughout the history of the earth. Palynology , the study of fossil pollens and spores, routinely works out the stratigraphy of rocks by comparing pollen and spore assemblages with those of well known layers a tool frequently used by petroleum exploration companies in the search for new fields. The fossilised teeth or elements of Conodont s are an equally useful tool. 1. Genetic marker

A genetic marker is a gene or DNA sequence with a known location on a chromosome that can be used to identify individuals or species . It can be described as a variation which may arise due to mutation or alteration in the genomic loci that can be observed. A genetic marker may be a short DNA sequence, such as a sequence surrounding a single base pair change single nucleotide polymorphism , SNP , or a long one, like minisatellite s. Background For many years, gene mapping was limited in most organisms by traditional genetic markers which include genes that encode easily observable characteristics such as blood types or seed shapes. The use of predictive markers is becoming increasingly relevant in cancer therapy as it allows for better identification of patients who will respond positively to the therapy. In the clinical setting, predictive markers are limited to use in breast cancer . ref cite journal last Duffy first Michael title Predictive Markers in Breast and Other Cancers A Review journal Clinical Chemistry year 2005 volume 51 pages 494 503 url http www.clinchem.org cgi content full 51 3 494 accessdate 2011 04 04 issue 3 pmid 15637130 month March ref Expression of estrogen and progesterone receptor s can determine the benefits of hormone therapy , whilst the benefit of treating breast cancer patients with Trastuzumab herceptin Trastuzumab is determined by the expression of HER2. There are many advantages to utilizing a predictive marker in cancer therapy including better patient management minimizing unnecessary suffering from side effects with ultimately the wrong treatment choice, reducing loss of precious time whilst determining whether a therapy will provide any benefit, and a reduction in cost to both the patient and the wider health community. Kernel markers were declared in the kernel code by one liners of the form source lang c trace mark name, format string, ... source Where tt name tt is the marker s unique name, and tt format string tt describes the remaining arguments types. A marker can be on or off depending on whether a probe is connected to it or not. Code which wants to hook into a trace point first calls source lang c int marker probe register const char name, const char format string, marker probe func probe, void pdata source to register its tt probe tt callback with the marker point tt pdata tt is a private data value that the code wants to pass to the tt probe tt . Later, the tt probe tt is turned on and off using source lang c int marker arm const char name int marker disarm const char name source Using markers has a negligible overhead thanks in part to Immediate Values , ref name 2007aDesnoyers Mathieu Desnoyers, http thread.gmane.org gmane.linux.kernel 550209 focus 550214 nowiki patch 08 10 nowiki Immediate Value Documentation ref another support mechanism that embeds switches in the code that can be dynamically turned on and off, without using a memory reference and thus saving cache lines. ref name 2007bDesnoyers Mathieu Desnoyers, http thread.gmane.org gmane.linux.kernel 568586 focus 568613 nowiki patch 7 8 nowiki Immediate Values Documentation ref The initial motivation to create this static instrumentation infrastructure was the large performance overhead induced by the predating dynamic instrumentation mechanism Kprobe mechan ...   more details
