  1. Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter

image Mars Hemispheres MOLA.jpg right thumb 260px MOLA topographic images of the two hemispheres of Mars. This image appeared on the cover of Science magazine in May 1999. The Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter MOLA was one of five instruments on board the Mars Global Surveyor MGS spacecraft , which operated in Mars orbit from September 1997 to November 2006. However, the MOLA instrument transmitted altimetry data only until June, 2001. The MOLA instrument transmitted infrared laser pulses towards Mars at a rate of 10 times per second, and measured the time of flight to determine the range distance of the MGS spacecraft to the Martian surface. The range measurements resulted in precise topography topographic maps of Mars. The precision maps are applicable to studies in geophysics , geology and atmospheric circulation . MOLA also functioned as a passive radiometer , and measured the radiance of the surface of Mars at 1064 nanometers. ref name mola a Planetary laser altimetry A laser altimeter is an instrument that measures the distance from an orbiting spacecraft to the surface of the planet or asteroid that the spacecraft is orbiting. The distance is determined by measuring the complete round trip time of a laser pulse from the instrument to the surface of the planet or asteroid and back to the instrument. The distance to the object can be determined by multiplying the round trip pulse time by the speed of light and dividing by two. 1. Project Orbiter

Project Orbiter was a proposed United States spacecraft , an early competitor to Project Vanguard . It was jointly run by the United States Army and United States Navy . It was ultimately rejected by the Ad Hoc Committee on Special Capabilities, which selected Project Vanguard instead. Although the project was canceled on August 3, 1955, the basic design was used for the Juno I rocket which launched Explorer 1 , the first satellite launched by the United States. Proposal In the 1920s and 1930s, the German Verein f r Raumschiffahrt Society for Space Travel Verein f r Raumschiffahrt, referred to as VfR by its founders began to gain in popularity, with membership growing from outside of Germany as well as within. The primary cause for the VfR s gaining world wide appeal was due to the writings of mathematician Hermann Oberth who detailed, in a 1923 publication entitled The Rocket into Interplanetary Space, the mechanics of placing a satellite into Earth orbit . ref cite web url http www.hq.nasa.gov office pao History SP 4201 ch1 3.htm title Part I, Chapter I, Section entitled The Highway to Space author Loyd S.
