    Mart n de Azpilcueta ref Aspilcueta, Azpilcoeta, Navarrus, Doctor Navarrus ref 13 December 1491 &ndash 1 June 1586 , or Doctor Navarrus , was an important Spanish canonist and theologian in his time, and an early economist , the first to develop monetarist theory. Image Martin Azpilicueta.jpg thumb framed center Mart n de Azpilicueta center Life He was born in Bar soain , Kingdom of Navarre Navarre , and was a relative of Francis Xavier . He studied at Alcal de Henares Alcal and in France, and became professor of canon law at Toulouse and Cahors . Later, he returned to Spain and occupied the same chair for fourteen years at Salamanca , and for seven years at Coimbra in Portugal. At the age of eighty he went to Rome to defend his friend Bartolomeo Carranza , Archbishop of Toledo , accused before the Tribunal of the Inquisition. Though he failed to exculpate the Archbishop, Aspilcueta was highly honoured at Rome by several popes, and was looked on as an oracle of learning and prudence. His humility, disinterestedness, and charity were proverbial. He reached the patriarchal age of 95, and died at Rome. He is buried in the national Church of San Antonio de Portoghesi. Among other lives of Azpilcueta there is one by his nephew, prefixed to the Roman edition of his works. Biography Background and Early years, 1512 1556 Diego de Covarrubias was born in Toledo, Spain Toledo on July 25, 1512. His father was Alonso de Covarrubias 1488 1570 , an architect who designed the New Kings chapel of the Cathedral of Toledo . Diego s younger brother, Antonio de Covarrubias 1514 24 1602 , would be a professor of law at the University of Salamanca and served as consejero of Crown of Castile Castile . Diego de Covarrubias was educated at the University of Salamanca , where he studied canon law under Mart n de Azpilcueta and theology under Francisco de Vitoria and Domingo de Soto . Episcopate, 1556 1577 On April 24, 1556, without his being consulted in advance, Covarrubias was appointed Archbishop of Santo Domingo .
