  1. Schubert calculus

In mathematics , Schubert calculus is a branch of algebraic geometry introduced in the nineteenth century by Hermann Schubert , in order to solve various counting problems of projective geometry part of enumerative geometry . It was a precursor of several more modern theories, for example characteristic class es, and in particular its algorithmic aspects are still of current interest. The objects introduced by Schubert are the Schubert cells , which are locally closed sets in a Grassmannian defined by conditions of incidence geometry incidence of a linear subspace in projective space with a given flag manifold flag . For details see Schubert variety . The intersection theory mathematics intersection theory of these cells, which can be seen as the product structure in the cohomology ring of the Grassmannian of associated cohomology class es, in principle allows the prediction of the cases where intersections of cells results in a finite set of points which are potentially concrete answers to enumerative questions. A supporting theoretical result is that the Schubert cells or rather, their classes span the whole cohomology ring. In detailed calculations the combinatorial aspects enter as soon as the cells have to be indexed. Lifted from the Grassmanian , which is a homogeneous space , to the general linear group that acts on it, similar questions are involved in the Bruhat decomposition and classification of parabolic subgroup s by block matrix . Putting Schubert s system on a rigorous footing is Hilbert s problems Hilbert s 15th problem . 1. Schubert variety

In algebraic geometry , a Schubert variety is a certain algebraic variety subvariety of a Grassmannian , usually with Mathematical singularity singular points . Described by means of linear algebra , a typical example consists of the k dimensional subspaces V of an n dimensional vector space W , such that math dim V cap W j ge j math for j 1, 2, ..., k , where math W 1 subset W 2 subset cdots subset W k, quad dim W j a j math is a certain flag mathematics flag of subspaces in W and 0    a sub 1 sub     ...    a sub k sub     n . More generally, given a Semisimple algebraic group semisimple algebraic group G with a Borel subgroup B and a standard parabolic subgroup P , it is known that the homogeneous space X G P , which is an example of a flag variety , consists of finitely many B orbits that may be parametrized by certain elements of the Weyl group W . The closure of the B orbit associated to an element w of the Weyl group is denoted by X sub w sub and is called a Schubert variety in G P . The classical case corresponds to G SL sub n sub and P being the k th maximal parabolic subgroup of  G . Significance Schubert varieties form one of the most important ... of Schubert varieties is provided by Kazhdan Lusztig polynomial s, which encode their local Goresky MacPherson intersection cohomology .
