Dominique Grenier born 1931 was a local politician in Shawinigan, Quebec . For reasons unknown, William of Tyre refers to him as Eustace II . He mentions him in 1124, 1126, and 1154. He appears, however, as Gerard in several acts of the kingdom dated between 1147 and 1165. Some historians have been led to suggest that Eustace had more than two sons. He last appears witnessing a charter of 15 March 1165, but his son does not appear until 4 February 1171. The rulership of Sidon is not recorded between these years, during which Gerard must have died. It is impossible that Eustace II and Gerard should be two successive lords of Sidon. Gerard disputed a fief with one of his vassals and tried to repossess it, but Amalric I of Jerusalem intervened to reverse the situation in the vassal s favour. Balian I Grenier was the Count of Sidon and one of the most Vassals of the Kingdom of Jerusalem important lords of the Kingdom of Jerusalem from 1202 to 1241. He succeeded his father Renaud Grenier Renaud . His mother was Helvis of Ibelin Helvis , a daughter of Balian of Ibelin . He was a powerful and important representative of the native aristocracy during the three Levantine crusades of the first half of the thirteenth century. During the Fifth Crusade , Balian advised the troops of Andrew II of Hungary against sallying into the deserted regions of his county of Sidon, regions almost under Saracen control. The Hungarians refused to listen, however, and many were massacred during a Turkmen people Turcoman ambush. During the Sixth Crusade , Balian supported the Emperor Frederick II for the throne of Jerusalem. He negotiated with Giordano Filangieri , the marshal of Kingdom of Sicily Sicily , sent by Frederick in 1228 to represent his authority in Acre, Israel Acre until the emperor could make the trip in person. Balian was the chief native ally of the crusaders at the time when they were not well received by the locals. He supported the Emperor and his Germanisation, but tried, as with the previous crusade, to prevent a bloodbath.
