Lectures on Jurisprudence is a book of Adam Smith s lectures, comprising notes taken from his early lectures, plus an early draft of The Wealth of Nations . Published as part of the 1976 Glasgow Edition of the works and correspondence of Adam Smith . It consists of two sets of lecture notes that were apparently taken from Smith s lectures of the 1760s, along with an Early Draft of The Wealth of Nations . The same material had also appeared as An Early Draft of Part of The Wealth of Nations and as Lectures on Justice, Police, Revenue and Arms . The documents are generally accepted as authentic, though this cannot be proved absolutely. Smith s Lectures on Jurisprudence, originally delivered at the University of Glasgow in 1762 1763, present his theory of the rules by which civil government ought to be directed. The chief purpose of government, according to Smith, is to preserve justice and the object of justice is security from injury. The state must protect the individual s right to his person, property, reputation, and social relations. ref cite book title Lectures on jurisprudence, or, The philosophy of positive law, Volume 2 last John Austin, Robert Campbell first authorlink coauthors year 2005 publisher The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. location isbn page pages 1132 url http books.google.com books?id ohVt2e1Y6sEC&printsec frontcover&dq bibliogroup 22Lectures on Jurisprudence Or, The Philosophy of Positive Law 22&hl en&ei w83dToSNG4qF4gSD1eXyBg&sa X&oi book result&ct result&resnum 1&ved 0CC8Q6AEwAA v onepage&q&f false accessdate ref Theme Adam Smith observed in his Lectures on Jurisprudence 1762 a series of talks that he gave at the University of Glasgow that national character plays a significant role in economic transactions the Dutch, he said, are more faithful to their word and better at performing agreements than the English, and the English more faithful than the Scots. The Dudleian lectures are a series of prestigious lecture s on religion at Harvard University , where they are the oldest endowed lectureship. They have been given every year from 1755 to the present. The lectures were endowed by Paul Dudley jurist Paul Dudley in 1750 with a sum of 133 6s 8d. Dudley specified that the topic of the lectures should rotate among four themes, so that students would hear each one before graduation The principles of natural religion . The truths of Bible scriptural revelation . The detecting and convicting and exposing the idolatry of the Roman Catholic Church Romish church , their tyranny , usurpations, damnable Heresy heresies , fatal errors, abominable superstition s, and other crying wickedness in their high places . The validity of the presbyterial ordination of ministers specifically, in the form practiced at the time in Scotland and Geneva , and among Englishmen who opposed the episcopal ordination of the Church of England . In accordance with these precepts, the Dudleian lecturers of the 18th century did faithfully promote the doctrines of New England s anti authoritarian Low church Low Church Protestantism , and as L.K. Gilbert argues wedded them to principles of Age of Enlightenment Enlightenment rationality by associating ecclesiastical with civil tyranny . By the 19th century, however, the virulent anti Catholicism had been much tempered, and in the middle of the 20th century, Clifford K. Shipton could note that for many years past it has not been deemed expedient by the college authorities to honor the donor s wishes in this respect.
