  1. Diffuson

Unreferenced date December 2009 Distinguish diffusion The diffuson is a mathematic al object, which often appears in the theory of disordered electronic systems a part of condensed matter physics . In a disordered system, the motion of an electron is not ballistic, but diffusive i.e., the electron does not move along a straight line, but experiences a series of random scatterings off of impurities. This random motion diffusion is described by a differential equation, known as the diffusion equation . The diffuson is the Green s function of the diffusion equation. The diffuson plays an important role in the theory of electron transport in disordered systems, especially for phase coherent effects such as universal conductance fluctuations . 1. Negative flag

Refimprove date December 2009 In computer central processing unit processor the negative flag or sign flag is a single bit in a system status flag register used to indicate whether the result of last mathematic operation resulted in a value whose most significant bit was set. In a two s complement interpretation of the result, the negative flag is set if the result was negative. For example, in an 8 bit signed number system, 37 will be represented as 1101 1011 in binary the most significant bit is 1 , while 37 will be represented as 0010 0101 the most significant bit is 0 . In linguistics, the Irrealis mood Potential potential mood The mathematic al study of potentials is known as potential theory it is the study of harmonic function s on manifold s. This mathematical formulation arises from the fact that, in physics, the scalar potential is irrotational , and thus has a vanishing Laplacian the very definition of a harmonic function. In physics , a potential may refer to the scalar potential or to the vector potential . In either case, it is a field physics field defined in space, from which many important physical properties may be derived. Leading examples are the gravitational potential and the electric potential , from which the motion of gravitating or electrically charged bodies may be obtained. Specific forces have associated potentials, including the Coulomb potential , the van der Waals potential , the Lennard Jones potential and the Yukawa potential . In electrochemistry there are Galvani potential and Volta potential . In Thermodynamics potential refers to thermodynamic potential . 1. Conserved quantity

Refimprove date March 2010 In mathematics, a conserved quantity of a dynamical system is a function H of the dependent variables that is a constant in other words, conserved ref cite book last Blanchard, Devaney, Hall title Differential Equations publisher Brooks Cole Publishing Co year 2005 pages 486 isbn 0495012653 ref along each trajectory of the system. A conserved quantity can be a useful tool for qualitative analysis . Not all systems have conserved quantities, however the existence has nothing to do with linearity a simplifying trait in a system which means that finding and examining conserved quantities can be useful in understanding nonlinear system s. Conserved quantities are not unique, since one can always add a constant to a conserved quantity. Since most laws of physics express some kind of conservation, conserved quantities commonly exist in mathematic models of real systems. For example, any classical mechanics model will have energy as a conserved quantity so long as the forces involved are conservative force conservative . Differential equations For a first order system of differential equation s math frac d mathbf r d t mathbf f mathbf r, t math where bold indicates Euclidean vector vector quantities, a scalar valued function H r is a conserved quantity of the system if, for all time and initial conditions in some specific domain, math frac d H d t 0. math Note that by using the Chain rule Chain rule for several variables multivariate chain rule , math frac d H d t nabla H cdot frac d mathbf r d t nabla H cdot mathbf f mathbf r, t math so that the definition may be written as math nabla H cdot mathbf f mathbf r, t 0 math which contains information specific to the system and can be helpful in finding conserved quantities, or establishing whether or not a conserved quantity exists. 1. Georgetown-IBM experiment

The Georgetown IBM experiment was an influential demonstration of machine translation , which was performed during January 7, 1954. Developed jointly by the Georgetown University and IBM , the experiment involved completely automatic translation of more than sixty Russian language Russian sentences into English language English . Background Conceived and performed primarily in order to attract governmental and public interest and funding by showing the possibilities of machine translation, it was by no means a fully featured system It had only six grammar rules and 250 items in its vocabulary. Apart from general topics, the system was specialised in the domain of organic chemistry . The translation was done using a IBM 701 mainframe computer. Over 60 Romanization of Russian Romanized Russian statements regarding a wide range of political, legal, mathematic, and scientific subjects were entered into the machine by a computer operator who knew no Russian, and the resulting English translations appeared on a printer. Translation Examples class wikitable bgcolor CCCCCC Russian Romanized English translation Mi pyeryedayem mislyi posryedstvom ryechyi. We transmit thoughts by means of speech. Vyelyichyina ugla opryedyelyayetsya otnoshyenyiyem dlyini dugi k radyiusu. Magnitude of angle is determined by the relation of length of arc to radius. Myezhdunarodnoye ponyimanyiye yavlyayetsya vazhnim faktorom v ryeshyenyiyi polyityichyeskix voprosov. International understanding constitutes an important factor in decision of political questions. Reception Well publicized by journalists and perceived as a success, the experiment did encourage governments to invest in computational linguistics . The authors claimed that within three or five years, machine translation could well be a solved problem. However, the real progress was much slower, and after the ALPAC report in 1966, which found that the ten years long research had failed to fulfill the expectations, funding was reduced dram ...   more details
