  1. Mathematical sciences

Mathematical sciences is a broad term that refers to those academic disciplines that are primarily mathematical in nature but may not be universally considered subfields of mathematics proper. Statistics , for example, is mathematical in its methods but grew out of political arithmetic which merged with inverse probability and grew through applications in the social sciences , some areas of physics and biometrics to become its own separate, though closely allied, field. Computer science , computational science , operations research , cryptology , econometrics , theoretical physics , and actuarial science are other fields that may be considered mathematical sciences. Some institutions offer degrees in mathematical sciences e.g., the United States Military Academy and University of Khartoum or applied mathematical sciences e.g., the University of Rhode Island . The Mathematical Diary was founded by Robert Adrain at Columbia College now Columbia University after two unsuccessful attempts, in 1808 and 1814, to start a more purely academic mathematics journal, The Analyst, or, Mathematical Museum . The Mathematical Diary contained, in addition to some serious mathematics, articles of general interest such as mathematical puzzle s aimed at the amateur problem solver, which may have helped it attract more laypeople as subscribers and contributed to its greater longevity. Adrain edited the first four issues after he left Columbia in 1826 for Rutgers University Rutgers , James Ryan, previously the publisher, took over the editorship. 1. Mathematical challenges

Mathematical challenges generally refer to more basic mathematics such as that experienced in elementary or junior high school, but can extend to any realm of the study. It is commonly accepted that mathematics is a difficult area of study. Even so, it is generally agreed that the difficulty experienced when one attempts to master a topic leads to meaningful, long lasting, rewards. There is a long list of mathematics competitions throughout the world. Professional context There are a number of problems in pure mathematics with a cash prize offered for a successful solution. Often the problems are thought of as relevant areas of study in modern mathematical research. One example of such a mathematical challenge is the Riemann hypothesis which is currently an unsolved problem. The Riemann hypothesis is that all nontrivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function have a real part of frac 1 2 . A proof or disproof of this would have far reaching implications in number theory , especially for the distribution of prime number s. There are several professional organizations that collect various unsolved math problems and present them as mathematical challenges.
