The long running journal required a dedicated illustrator, and when Joseph Dalton Hooker Joseph Hooker sought a replacement, his second cousin MatildaSmith was inducted to become Kew s Botanical illustrator . She learned the craft that her immediate predecessor had described as the analysis of a dried flower, from an herbarium specimen, perhaps very small, worm eaten and gluey, and having no apparent analogy to any known plant. Smith was to become first official botanical artist of the leading authority, the Kew Gardens Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew . Between 1878 and 1923, Smith drew over 2,300 plates for the Curtis s and other publications. She also made reproductions for the library of the institution, which were added to the incomplete works held there. Unreferenced auto yes date December 2009 The Nurse Matilda books were written by the British children s author Christianna Brand 1907&ndash 1988 and illustrated by her cousin, Edward Ardizzone . The books are based on stories told to the cousins by their grandfather. They concern a hideously ugly nursemaid known as Nurse Matilda who has been highly recommended to Mr. and Mrs. Brown by several agencies. Nurse Matilda arrives at the household of the Brown family and becomes a nanny to the innumerable Brown children. The Brown children are exceedingly naughty and frighten off many governesses in a wonderfully mischievous way&mdash until Nurse Matilda comes. She teaches the children to behave, and deals with the fearsome and persnickety Great Aunt Adelaide Stitch. In the end the children become good and decent, and Nurse Matilda leaves to attend another family of naughty children. In the sequels, the children revert back to their wicked ways, and the distressed Mr. and Mrs. Brown have no other choice but to send for Nurse Matilda again. In the second book, the children are sent to live with their domineering Great Aunt Adelaide in her London manor. In the third and final book, they are whisked away to the hospital following a prank that had gone wrong. The Matilda effect is the systematic repression and denial of the contribution of women scientists in research, whose work is often attributed to their male colleagues. This effect was first described in 1993 by science historian Margaret W. Rossiter . It is named after the U.S. women s rights activist Matilda Joslyn Gage , who first observed this phenomenon at the end of the 19th century. The Matilda effect is related to the Matthew effect sociology Matthew effect , which states that eminent scientists will often get more credit than a comparatively unknown researcher, even if their work is similar. Rossiter provides several examples of this effect Trotula , an Italian physician 11th 12th centuries , wrote books which were attributed to male authors after her death, and hostility towards women as teachers and healers led to her very existence being denied. Known cases from the 20th century are Rosalind Franklin , Lise Meitner and Marietta Blau . Sources Margaret W. Rossiter The del Matthew del Matilda Effect in Science. in Social Studies of Science.
