Meaning is a concept used in psychology as well as in other fields such as philosophy, linguistics, semiotics and sociology. These multidisciplinary use of the term are not independent, but more or less overlapping. Within each of these fields there are different ways in which the term meaning is constructed and used and each of these constructions may match related constructions in other fields. According to the semantic analysis of Geoffrey Leech , the associative meaning of an expression has to do with individual mental understandings of the speaker. They, in turn, can be broken up into six sub types connotative, collocative, social, affective, reflected and thematic Mwihaki 2004 . The connotative meaning s of an expression are the thoughts provoked by a term when in reference to certain entities. Though these meanings may not be strictly implied by relevant definitions, they show up in common or preferred usage regardless. This is not to be confused with what is historically referred to as connotation , which more closely describes rigid definitions of words. collocation Collocative meaning , or collocation , describes words that regularly appear together in common use within certain contexts . Social meaning , where words are used to establish relationships between people and to delineate social roles. For example, in Japanese, the suffix san when added to a proper name denotes respect, sometimes indicating that the speaker is subordinate to the listener while the suffix chan denotes that the speaker thinks the listener is a child or childlike either for purposes of affection or derision . Affective meaning has to do with the personal feelings or attitudes of the speaker. Reflected meaning has to do with when one sense of a particular word affects the understanding and usage of all the other senses of the word. Thematic meaning concerns itself with how the order of words spoken affects the meaning that is entailed. In existentialism , meaning is understood as the worth of life. Meaning in existentialism is unlike typical conceptions of the meaning of life , because it is descriptive . Unreferenced date December 2009 Context date October 2009 Semiotics In semiotics , the meaning of a sign is its place in a sign relation , in other words, the set of roles that it occupies within a given sign relation. This statement holds whether sign is taken to mean a sign type or a sign token . Defined in these global terms, the meaning of a sign is not in general analyzable with full exactness into completely localized terms, but aspects of its meaning can be given approximate analyses, and special cases of sign relations frequently admit of more local analyses. Two aspects of meaning that may be given approximate analyses are the connotative relation and the denotative relation . The connotative relation is the relation between signs and their interpretant signs. The denotative relation is the relation between signs and objects. An arbitrary association exists between the signified and the signifier. For example, a US salesperson doing business in Etiquette in Japan Japan might interpret silence following an offer as rejection, while to Japanese negotiators silence means the offer is being considered. Multiple issues orphan February 2012 POV March 2009 notability March 2009 Theatre of Meaning Theory The Text Ellis believes that once the author has no control of the work, then it takes on a life of its own, much like a coat which looks different on whoever wears it. Once the work is completed and the author has no control over what happens with the text, then it becomes a separate entity disconnected from the author. Whoever reads the work from then on, can place their own meaning based on their own knowledge of their world on the work, whether or not they choose to research into the author themselves. When a company stage a work, they bring their own meaning to it again. A work is just paper covered in words, a building made of bricks. The words are the bricks, when you look at one brick on its own you as an individual bring your own meaning to what the brick means, based on your own knowledge of the world.
