Playing career Mears was a 5th round selection of the Seattle Mariners in the 1996 amateur draft. Chris spent 7 seasons in the Mariners farm system, making it as far as the teams San Antonio Missions AA club. Mears was released by Seattle following the By 2002 season. Shortly after being able to do so, Mears signed with the Detroit Tigers opening the season with Detroit s class AAA team, the Toledo Mud Hens .
