Background Perioperative medicine encompasses the care of the patient preparing for, having and recuperating from surgery. In the practice of perioperative medicine the surgeon , anesthesiologist , intensivist and medical consultant work in concert. It remains a field governed primarily by the art of medicine. Notably, in the last decade, there has been a concerted effort by various anesthesia representative bodies to incorporate greater teaching into management of patients during the perioperative period. 1. Flexnerian medicine

orphan date January 2008 Flexnerian medicine refers to an era of modern medical practice that crystallized with the publication of the Flexner Report in 1910. The Flexner Report criticized the loose standards of medical education that existed in the United States in the 19th century. The report also advocated the establishment of standards that were more strict and better supported by science. Although the report provides the name for this period in medical history, it reflected an ongoing process that included the establishment of the American Medical Association and the success of conventional modern medicine . These developments flourished at the expense of other, discredited schools of medical treatment such as Homeopathy homeopathic medicine and hydropathic medicine . The era of flexnerian medicine is still with us, although alternative schools of medical practice continued to emerge in the 20th century, including evidence based medicine and various forms of alternative medicine . 1. Behavioral medicine

missing citations date May 2007 Behavioral medicine is an interdisciplinary field of medicine concerned with the development and integration of knowledge in the biological, behavioral, psychological, and social sciences relevant to health and illness . The term is often used interchangeably, and incorrectly, with health psychology , whereas the practice of behavioral medicine also includes applied psychophysiological therapies such as biofeedback , hypnosis , and biobehavioral therapy of physical disorders, aspects of occupational therapy , rehabilitation medicine , and physiatry , as well as preventive medicine . One of its academic forebears is the field of psychosomatic medicine . Practitioners of behavioral medicine include appropriately qualified nurses, psychologists, and physicians. More recently, it has expanded its area of practice to interventions with providers of medical services, in recognition of the fact that the behavior of providers can have a determinative effect on patients outcomes. For example, there exists a large interest in communication behaviors between clinician and patient within the field. Other areas include correcting perceptual bias in diagnostic behavior remediating clinicians attitudes that impinge negatively upon patient treatment and addressing clinicians behaviors that promote disease development and illness maintenance in patients, whether within a malpractice framework or not.
