    The Merionethshire by election, 1899 was a parliamentary by election held for the House of Commons of the United Kingdom House of Commons constituency of Merioneth UK Parliament constituency Merionethshire on 2 May 1899. Vacancy The by election was caused by the death of the sitting Liberal Party UK Liberal Member of Parliament UK MP , T. E. Ellis Thomas Edward Ellis on 5 April 1899. ref The Times, 6 April 1899 p4 ref Candidates Merionethshire Liberal Association considered a number of possible candidates but the favourite from an early stage was Owen Morgan Edwards , an academic at Lincoln College, Oxford , a native of Merionethshire who was described as an ardent Welsh nationalism Welsh Nationalist . ref The Times, 14 April 1899 p11 ref Edwards was hardly enthusiastic to take up the offer of being the Liberal candidate. He wrote to Dr Edward Jones, chairman of the county Liberals, that he had many days of anxiety and sleepless nights since learning he was the front runner. He said that he would be relieved if not called upon to stand and would rather not take the position unless absolutely needed. ref The Times, 18 April 1899 p12 ref The Conservative Party UK Conservatives had fought Merionethshire at the United Kingdom general election, 1895 1895 general election and at its meeting in Dolgellau on 14 April 1899 resolved that the seat should be contested at the by election.     This is a list of High Sheriffs of Merionethshire . The historic county of Merioneth was originally created in 1284. The administrative county of Merioneth was created from the historic county under the Local Government Act 1888 . This was abolished in turn under the Local Government Act 1972 on April 1, 1974 and became the Meirionnydd district of the new county of Gwynedd . The shrievalty of Merionethshire, together with that of Anglesey and Caernarvonshire, was abolished in 1974 when the county and shrievalty of Gwynedd was created. He was the son of Maredudd ap Llywelyn ap Maredudd ap Cynan and was a direct descendant of Owain Gwynedd through his son Prince Cynan ab Owain Gwynedd Cynan , Lord of Merionethshire Meirionydd . Llywelyn ap Maredudd was a distant cousin and contemporary of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd the last native Prince of Wales and is known to have had the following sons Madog ap Llywelyn ap Maredudd Dafydd ap Llywelyn ap Maredudd Llywelyn ap Llywelyn ap Maredudd Maredudd ap Llywelyn ap Maredudd His eldest son, Madog, led an uprising against English occupation between 1294 1295. He was survived by two sons whose fates are as yet unknown. The descendants of these children, as well as those of Madog s younger brothers Dafydd, Llywelyn and Maredudd represent potential extant branches of the House of Gwynedd . References J.
