    Merthyr Tydfil College is a further education college located in Merthyr Tydfil , Wales . Since May 2006, it is a constituent college of the University of Glamorgan . Previously, the college was an independent institution, but became part of the University of Glamorgan Group in May 2006. Although it is a consituent college of the university, Merthyr Tydfil College is not officially part of the university. It is run by the University of Glamorgan as a separate organisation, primarily focused on offering further education to the local community in Merthyr Tydfil. The college provides a range of courses to students from the local area, including GCSE s, A Level s, Business And Technology Education Council BTEC BTEC s, Apprenticeship s and Access course s. Merthyr Tydfil College also offers a limited provision of higher education courses in conjunction with the University of Glamorgan. It was created in 1911 for the Wales Welsh coal mining magnate William Lewis, 1st Baron Merthyr Sir William Lewis, 1st Baronet . He had already been created a Baronet , of Nantgwyne in the County of Glamorgan, in 1896. The barony is named after the town of Merthyr Tydfil , where Lewis was born. Lord Merthyr s grandson, the third Baron, was Chairman of Committees in the House of Lords from 1957 to 1965 and a Deputy Speaker from 1957 to 1974. The latter was succeeded by his son, the fourth Baron. He Peerage Act 1963 disclaimed the peerage for life on 26 April 1977, three weeks after succeeding his father. He does not use his title of Baronet either. The Hon. Robin Lewis, fourth son of the third Baron, was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Dyfed in December 2006, although this was not officially reported in the London Gazette until September 2007. History The park occupies nearly fifty acres 20.25ha . It opened on 27 July 1869. It was landscaped and planted by William Barron who had laid out many parks in England. The park was created at the instigation of R.H. Rhys. In 1956 the National Eisteddfod of Wales National Eisteddfod was held in the park. A Gorsedd circle was erected to commemorate this event, the stone circle still remaining. The park is the location of the annual Aberdare Park National Road Races, which is a motorcycle race held on the convert 0.9 mi km adj on circuit within the park. The road races in 2011 will be held on the weekend of July 9th & 10th The track is the only track in the country which takes a left course. It is also one of the best on the country, and the hardest. Sculptures and Features Visitors to the park are greeted by the prominent sculpture of William Lewis, 1st Baron Merthyr Sir William T. Lewis Lord Merthyr .
