Unreferenced date December 2009 In metadata , dimension is a set of equivalent units of measure, where equivalence between two units of measure is determined by the existence of a quantity preserving one to one correspondence between values measured in one unit of measure and values measured in the other unit of measure, independent of context, and where characterizing operations are the same. The equivalence defined here forms an equivalence relation on the set of all units of measure. Each equivalence class corresponds to a dimensionality. The units of measure temperature in degrees Fahrenheit and temperature in degrees Celsius have the same dimensionality, because given a value measured in degrees Fahrenheit there is a value measured in degrees Celsius with the same quantity, and vice versa. Quantity preserving one to one correspondences are the well known equations C 5 9 F &minus 32 and F 9 5 C 32. Units of measure are not limited to physical categories. Examples of physical categories are linear measure, area, volume, mass, velocity, time duration. Examples of non physical categories are currency, quality indicator, colour intensity Quantities may be grouped together into categories of quantities which are mutually comparable. Lengths, diameters, distances, heights, wavelengths and so on would constitute such a category. Mutually comparable quantities have the same dimensionality. Metadata modeling is a type of metamodeling used in software engineering and systems engineering for the analysis and construction of models applicable and useful some predefined class of problems. Meta modeling is the analysis, construction and development of the frames, rules, constraints, models and theories applicable and useful for the modeling in a predefined class of problems. The meta data side of the diagram consists of a concept diagram. This is basically an adjusted class diagram as described in Booch, Rumbaugh and Jacobson 1999 . Important notions are concept, generalization, association, multiplicity and aggregation. The class definition ref Booch, Rumbaugh and Jacobson 1999 ref is adopted to define a concept, namely a set of objects that share the same attributes, operations, relations, and semantics. The following concept types are specified STANDARD CONCEPT a concept that contains no further sub concepts. A standard concept is visualized with a rectangle. COMPLEX CONCEPT a concept that consists of a collection of sub concepts. Complex concepts are divided into OPEN CONCEPT a complex concept whose sub concepts are expanded. An open concept is visualized with two white rectangles above each other. CLOSED CONCEPT a complex concept whose sub concepts are not expanded since it is not relevant in the specific context.
