  1. Metalinguistics

Metalinguistics is the branch of linguistics that studies language and its relationship to culture and society . It is the study of dialogue relationships between units of speech communication as manifestations and enactments of co existence. The neologism metalinguistics emerged between 1950 and 1960. http books.google.com books?hl en&lr &id TMuhVO7LBdAC&oi fnd&pg PP9&dq metalinguistics&ots YAATKdlPLa&sig W2K52EEyrK6GnmtQxQnAf3G0 BE v onepage&q metalinguistics&f true 1 Background Jean mile Gombert, who teaches genetic psychology at the University of Dijon, states that it is one thing to find an adequate way of treating the comprehension and production of language and it is quite another to succeed in adopting a reflexive attitude with regard to language objects and their manipulation. It is this second task that a recently developed psycholinguistic tradition has given the name metalinguistics. http books.google.com books?hl en&lr &id TMuhVO7LBdAC&oi fnd&pg PP9&dq metalinguistics&ots ... defines the field of metalinguistics as the subject s knowledge of the characteristics and functioning ...?id MYze8gaHYDUC&pg PA106&dq Metalinguistics awareness&hl en&ei t3axS62QNZCKNqjhteID&sa X&oi book result&ct result&resnum 5&ved 0CD4Q6AEwBDgK v onepage&q Metalinguistics 20awareness&f false Text in Education ... wrote the book http books.google.com books?id FDWymkbfP30C&pg PA10&lpg PA10&dq Metalinguistics ... 1. Animal language

Animal language is the modeling of human language in non human animal systems. While the term is widely used, researchers agree that animal languages are not as complex or expressive as human language . Some researchers including the linguist Charles F. Hockett Charles Hockett , who proposed a list of design features of Human Language, argue that there are significant differences separating human language from animal communication even at its most complex, and that the underlying principles are not related. ref Hocket , Charles F. 1960. Logical considerations in the study of animal communication. Animals sounds and animal communication, ed. W.E. Lanyon and W.N. Tavolga, pp.  392 430. ref Accordingly, Thomas A. Sebeok has proposed not to use the term language in case of animal sign systems. Others argue that an evolutionary continuum exists between the communication methods these animals use and human language. Examining this continuum could help explain how humanity evolved its incredibly sophisticated proficiency for language. The following properties of human language have been argued to separate it from animal communication Arbitrariness There is not necessarily a rational relationship between a sound or sign and its meaning, i.e. wikt symbolism symbolism . There is nothing intrinsically housy about the word house . Cultural transmission Language is passed from one language user to the next, consciously or unconsciously. Discreteness Language is composed of discrete units that are used in combination to create meaning. Displacement linguistics Displacement Languages can be used to communicate ideas about things that are not in the immediate vicinity either spatially or temporally, or both. Duality Language works on two levels at once, a surface level and a semantic meaningful level. Metalinguistics Ability to discuss language itself. Produ ...   more details

  1. Phonological awareness

Phonological awareness refers to an individual s awareness of the phonological structure, or sound structure, of spoken words. ref name Gillon 2004 ref name Rvachew, Ohberg, Grawberg, & Heyding, 2003 ref name Stahl & Murray 1994 Phonological awareness is an important and reliable predictor of later reading process reading ability and has, therefore, been the focus of much research. ref name Ehri et al. 2001 ref name National Institute of Child Health and Human Development 2000a ref name National Institute of Child Health and Human Development 2000b Overview Phonological awareness involves the detection and manipulation of sounds at three levels of sound structure 1 syllables , 2 Syllable onset onset s and syllable rime rime s, and 3 phoneme s. Awareness of these sounds is demonstrated through a variety of tasks see below . Although the tasks vary, they share the basic requirement that some operation e.g., identifying, comparing, separating, combining, generating be performed on the sounds. It is assumed that the individual performing these tasks must have awareness of the units of sound in order to perform the operation. Phonological awareness is one component of a larger phonological processing system used for speaking and listening. ref name Catts & Kamhi 2005 ref name Wagner & Torgesen 1987 ref name Wagner, Torgesen, Laughon, Simmons, & Rashotte, 1993 Phonological awareness is different from other phonological abilities in that it is a metalinguistics metalinguistic skill, requiring conscious awareness and reflection on the structure of language. ref name Gillon 2004 ref name Mattingly 1972 Other phonological abilities such as attending to speech, discriminating between sounds, holding sounds in memory can be performed without conscious reflection. However, these other phonological abilities are prerequisite to the development of phonological awareness. Therefore, general listening skills are often among those included in phonological awareness instruction. The t ...   more details
