The Taming of the Shrew is a Shakespearean comedy comedy by William Shakespeare , believed to have been written between 1590 and 1591. The play begins with a framing device , often referred to as the Induction play Induction , ref The term was first used by in Alexander Pope in 1725, and has been commonly employed ever since. The First Folio text simply begins the play with the standard Actus primus, Sc na prima heading, and there is no differentiation between the Induction and what is commonly referred to today as Act 1, Scene 1 Lucentio arriving in Padua . ref in which a mischievous nobleman tricks a drunken tinker named Christopher Sly Sly into believing he is actually a nobleman himself. Initially, Katherina is an unwilling participant in the relationship, but Petruchio tempers her with various psychological torments the taming until she becomes a compliant and obedient bride. The play s apparent misogyny misogynistic elements have become the subject of considerable controversy, particularly among modern audiences and readers.
