  1. Bloch oscillations

Bloch oscillation is a phenomenon from solid state physics . It describes the oscillation of a particle e.g. an electron confined in a periodic potential when a constant force is acting on it. It was first pointed out by Bloch and Zener while studying the electrical properties of crystals. In particular, they predicted that the motion of electrons in a perfect crystal under the action of a constant electric field would be oscillatory instead of uniform. While in natural crystals this phenomenon is extremely hard to observe due to the scattering of electrons by lattice defects, it has been observed in semiconductor superlattices and in different physical systems such as cold atoms in an optical potential and ultrasmall Josephson junction s. Derivation The one dimensional equation of motion for an electron in a constant electric field E is math hbar frac dk dt eE math , which has the solution math k t k 0 frac eE hbar t math . The velocity v of the electron is given by math v k frac 1 hbar frac d mathcal E dk math , where math mathcal E k math denotes the dispersion relation for the given energy band . Suppose that the latter has the tight binding form math mathcal E k A cos ak math , where a is the lattice parameter and A is a constant. Then v k is given by math v k frac 1 hbar frac d mathcal E dk frac Aa hbar sin ak math , and the electron position math x math by math x t int v k t dt frac A eE cos left frac aeE hbar t right math . This shows that the electron oscillates in real space. The frequency of the oscillations is given by math omega B ae E hbar math . 1. Subthreshold membrane potential oscillations

Subthreshold membrane potential oscillations are rhythmic fluctuations of the voltage difference between the interior and exterior of a neuron , in the nervous system . Neurons produce action potentials when their membrane potential increases past a critical threshold. If the voltage is below the threshold the neuron does not fire, but the membrane potential still fluctuates due to postsynaptic potential postsynaptic potentials and intrinsic electrical properties of neurons. In some type of neurons, the membrane potential can oscillation oscillate at specific frequencies. Although subthreshold oscillations do not directly result in neuronal firing, they may facilitate neural synchronization synchronous activity of neighboring neurons. It may also facilitate computation, particularly processing of sensory signals Overview Neurons display, beyond synapse synaptic and action potentials , rhythmic subthreshold membrane potential oscillations a particular type of neural oscillations . 1. Viper telescope

The Viper telescope is used to view mainly cosmic background radiation . Currently the telescope is helping scientists prove or disprove the Big Crunch theory. The telescope is also one of the most powerful of its kind. Previous cosmic background telescopes were smaller and did not have the ability to focus on the detailed measurement of distant clouds that Viper does. Location The Viper telescope is located at the Center for Astrophysical Research, also known as CARA in the Amundsen Scott station in Antarctica. The Viper project is run by many scientists team leader Dr. Jeffrey Peterson is a Carnegie Mellon astrophysicist who currently works to view distant clouds in the universe. Current uses The Viper telescope is being used to image the anisotropy seen in the universe. Inflation theory states the glowing clouds of gas in the sky would be in the form of an arc about math 1 2 math degree in the sky. The Viper telescope was able to confirm inflation theory, clearly showing the length of the arc was math 1 2 math a degree. Recently the telescope was able to detect tiny fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background radiation. This can give astronomers vast information about the distribution of matter in the proto Universe, such as how galaxies, stars, planets , and quasars formed from the free floating protons and electrons that made up the so called primordial soup . 1. REM Telescope

File REMTelescope.png thumb The REM Telescope The REM telescope Rapid Eye Mount is the result of an innovative project aiming at developing a fully automatic telescope to catch gamma ray bursts GRBs as soon as possible after their location by a high energy satellite. The 60cm REM telescope is located in the La Silla premises of the http www.eso.org ESO Chilean observatory ref cite journal last Chincarini first Guido coauthors REM team title The last born at La Silla REM, The Rapid Eye Mount journal The Messenger year 2003 volume 113 issue 40 url http cdsads.u strasbg.fr abs 2003Msngr.113...40C ref . REM has been designed to be a fast pointing instrument, and its relatively small size is in fact balanced by a 10 sec accurate fast pointing. This velocity makes REM suitable for immediate response to random alerts. The telescope hosts two instruments REMIR, an infrared imaging camera, and ROSS, a visible imager and slitless spectrograph. The two cameras can observe simultaneously thanks to a dichroic placed before telescope focus the same field of view of 10x10 arcmin. In the infrared range from 1 to 2.3 micron REMIR can use a z , J, H, K filter set. ROSS is equipped with a standard filter set V, R, I and an slitless Amici prism. The observing procedure is completely robotic and the nightly schedule is optimized for the observation of scheduled targets but it is immediately overdriven by GRB or other alerts. Typically REM can observe the new target after 30 seconds from notification. REM has been installed in its place during June 2003 and has been gathering data on GRB and other sources since then. Also it is a bench for experimental instrumentation and equipment. 1. Carnegie telescope

Merge to Lick Observatory date January 2012 orphan date February 2009 sources date February 2009 The Carnegie telescope is a convert 20 in mm adj on twin reflector telescope located at Lick Observatory in California , USA . The Carnegie convert 20 in mm adj on twin refractor is located in a mid sized dome at the observatory . Because the Carnegie is actually two convert 20 in mm adj on telescopes, side by side on a single mount, it looks more like a large set of very long binoculars rather than a telescope. One side is designed to photograph blue light and the other yellow light. The Carnegie was built expressly to measure the motions of as many star s as possible in our local area of the Milky Way . Called the Lick Proper Motion Survey , the Carnegie s mission was to photograph the entire night sky twice once in the 1950 s and again 20 years later. By comparing both sets of photographs, much was learned about the motion of stars and the structure of our galaxy . The Carnegie is not used today except when photographs of a wide area of the sky are needed. coord 37 20 33.38 N 121 38 16.83 W display title Category Telescopes Category Lick Observatory observatory stub ...   more details
