The Welsh Not or Welsh Note was a punishment system used in some Wales Welsh schools in the late 19th and early 20th century to dissuade children from speaking Welsh language Welsh . It was represented as a piece of wood, inscribed with the letters WN , that was hung around the necks of children who spoke Welsh during the school day. The not was given to any child overheard speaking Welsh, who would pass it to a different child if they were overheard speaking Welsh. By the end of the day, the wearer of the not would be given a corporal punishment lashing . The idea of the not was to discourage pupils from speaking Welsh, at a time when English language English was considered by some to be the only suitable medium of instruction . History The use of the not was recorded in the 18th century it was also commonly known as the cwstom , the Welsh stick and the Welsh lead a lump of lead . ref The Welsh Academy Encyclopedia of Wales. Cardiff University of Wales Press 2006 ref The practice was mentioned in the 1847 Treachery of the Blue Books Reports of the commissioners of enquiry into the state of education in Wales . Though highly critical of many aspects of Welsh culture , some of the inspectors commented on the existence of the practice of using nots as being arbitrary and cruel. The report did not endorse the practice. The reports also clearly show that the vast majority of education in Welsh Wales was still conducted in Welsh. A number of medieval chronicle s of the history of Wales survive, notably the 9th century Historia Brittonum and the 10th century Annales Cambriae . These early chronicles are written in Latin, while from the 12th century, some are composed in Middle Welsh . The oldest surviving manuscripts of chronicles kept in the National Library of Wales , Aberystwyth date to the 13th century. The history of Wales becomes tangible from the 7th century. Accounts in the chronicles pertaining to Dark Age Wales of the 5th and 6th century, including Historical basis for King Arthur early references to King Arthur , Vortigern , Maelgwn Gwynedd and others, may contain semi legendary or semi historical material, which however cannot be substantiated as historical with any certainty. The Welsh Basin was a northeast southwest aligned back arc basin back arc depositional basin during the Cambrian , Ordovician and Silurian periods during which a considerable thickness of marine sediment s was laid down in the area. To the southeast lay the Midland Platform a part of the micro continent of Avalonia and to the northwest, within the Iapetus Ocean , through what is now Ireland and the Lake District , was an island arc a northeast southwest aligned Irish Sea landmass which was associated with volcanism volcanic activity . Examination of the sediments and associated fossils allows th deeper centre of the basin to be distinguished from shallower platform areas along its southeastern margins. From the middle Silurian onwards, continental collision collision of Avalonia with the more northerly continent of Laurentia occurred giving rise to the Caledonian Orogeny . The basin inversion inversion of the basin occurred at that time i.e. its uplift and deformation. The southeastern limit of the Welsh Basin can be defined as the Welsh Borderland Fault Zone comprising the Pontesford Linley Fault and Church Stretton Fault which stretch from Pembrokeshire to Shropshire and, in the northwest, the Menai Strait Fault Zone . Its extent to the southwest and northeast is uncertain as these areas are cloaked by more recent rocks.
