  1. Luton body

Unreferenced date December 2009 van stub Image Bedford WLG Two Ton 1933 reg AYT 640.jpg thumb 1933 Bedford two ton Luton van. Image Ford Transit Luton.jpg thumb A Ford Transit van with Luton body A Luton body is a style of commercial vehicle body incorporating an enclosed box body extended over the cab. It takes its name from the town of Luton , in Bedfordshire , where the Bedford Vehicles Bedford commercial vehicle plant was located. It was invented by Mr B.E. Bertie Barrett who owned a haulage business in Luton which had, as its principal source of clientele, the millinery industry which made the town famous in the early twentieth century. Hats, many of which were made of straw, were distributed in hatboxes which were bulky, but had little weight. Since trucks were mostly delivered without bodies at the time just a chassis and cab , Mr Barrett had bodies built which extended over the cab and most of the way over the bonnet of the truck as well. The front of the Luton was tied to the front bumper of the truck by means of a metal pole on either side. The body style is common in medium commercial vehicles such as the Ford Transit , as well as larger vehicles especially those used by household removals companies. More modern examples may be streamlined to reduce wind resistance. Some commercial vehicles have a wind deflector on the cab roof, but this is not a Luton body the Luton is functional and can be accessed from the main body. The portion of the body that rests over the cab is referred to as the peak, also referred to, in some quarters as a luton, or a kick. Many commercial vehicles have tilting cabs. To allow for this the floor of the Luton may be hinged, and there may be a hinged flap at the front. Q. Powell Road, near Marion Station, Maryland . At one time it was a busy, flourishing, self sustaining center of activity with numerous homes and places of business. It is named after the Tull family, who evidently came to Somerset County about 1666 from Northampton County, Virginia . Thomas Tull IV 1750 1818 created the settlement which became known as Tulls Corner. He owned a grist mill and became an extensive farmer and ship owner. At that time, the settlement consisted of several homes, three or four stores, a post office , shoe shop, blacksmith shop, tannery, grist mill, and a nearby school and church. It was described in 1871 from this feather piece, found in a Hatmaking millinery shipment imported to London . Its origin was hypothesized to be from Java island Java , Indonesia or Tioman Island of Malaysia , because of the Great Argus absence from these locations. Parkes 1992 vehemently rejected the species validity and argued that the Double banded Argus almost certainly represents a mutant form of the Great Argus . The IUCN , following the precautionary principle , lists this taxon as extinct . While the feather is indeed quite distinct, it represents a fairly simple divergence The entirely asymmetrically pattern vanes are instead near symmetrical and both bear the darker brown shaftward area with innumerable whitish speckles. The shaft is thinner than usual and the feather would probably not have been useful for flight. Nothing similar has come to notice ever since, and as the feather piece is not a composite of two feather halves glued together but a natural albeit peculiar specimen, a hoax or fake can be ruled out. Nonetheless all conjecture that has been built around the feather piece, all that can be said is that at some time around 1870 an argus pheasant was shot in an unknown location which bore at least one such feather. Even if this one known individual was the last remnant of a disappearing population, it is hard to believe that only a single feather would have been taken from an unusual specimen of a well known ...   more details
