The Mingo Oak was once the largest and oldest white oak in the United States until it was declared dead and felled with ceremony on September 10, 1938. The oak s age was estimated at around 584 years. It was located on the property of the Island Creek Coal Company near Holden, West Virginia Holden in Mingo County, West Virginia Mingo County , West Virginia from which it derived its name. The Mingo Oak had attained a height of 145 feet 44 meters and a circumference of 30 feet 9 inches 9.4 meters . Death File MingoOak1.jpg thumb MingoOak1 There exist three stories that account for the Mingo Oak s death. It was originally reported by the Island Creek Coal Company that the oak s death was caused by a fungus , but another story contends that careless miners piled mine spoil over its roots, thus killing it. According to Roy Clarkson, author of Tumult on the Mountains Lumbering in West Virginia 1770 1920, a coal mine near the Mingo Oak had a permanently burning refuse pile, the fumes of which killed the oak. With a discography of over twenty years, he has explored a vast array of electronic music from techno to new age. Early Years In 1986 while still in his teens, Mingo released his first recordings under the name the Punked out Pansies. Over a four year period, the Pansies music had minimal electronic beats reminiscent of the band Suicide, with minimal to no vocals. Two songs, Johnny Bad and Eroded Cloudiness received airplay on many college radio stations in the Midwest. By 1990, Mingo disbanded the Punked out Pansies and teamed up with Joshua Lockey. The new duo recorded and performed experimental electronic music heavily influenced by the Chicago industrial sound. In 1992 Josh Lockey who was known as a local promoter of music and skateboarding events wanted to organize the first rave party in Iowa. After meeting with promoters in Chicago and being put on the guest list to the rave party Razzmatazz, Mingo and Lockey along with Matt Smaldino soon formed a promotion company. For several years they promoted events throughout the Midwest. During the mid 1990 s, Mingo began creating and performing techno music at rave parties and other events. By the end of the decade Mingo s sound progressed towards the ambient and space sounds being influenced by acts such as the Orb as well as Brian Eno and Steve Roach.
