It is usually held to be the oldest Old Church Slavonic manuscript with coherent text, dated at the latter half of the 10th century. Seven folios have been preserved in small format cca 14,5x10,5 cm of easily portable book to be of use to the missionaries on the move. By content it is a Roman Missal , i.e., a book collecting all the text used at the Mass liturgy holy mass service. Missal texts are accompanied by instructions on how to perform rites throughout the liturgical year, called rubric s , which is a term originating from Latin language Latin word rubrica designating red soil used for painting. The text of the Kiev Missal folios has been for the most part written in black these are the texts meant to be pronounced , and for the lesser part in red these are the instructions interpreting gestures that priest must perform and other instructions for the ceremony . They were built by E.P. Taylor Victory Mills company in 1943 to house the soy bean s used by a large plant that reprocessed the soy for a variety of purposes. The abandoned silos have been a temporary home for the homeless and abandoned since the 1980s. Although a heritage site, there are no plans to renovate or reuse the building. Located at the foot of Bathurst Street at Bathurst Quay Eireann Quay , the silos were built in 1928 to store malt for the Canada Malting Company . It was an important work of industrial architecture, grain elevator s had long been built out of wood, and thus at great danger of fire. Context date October 2008 Maple Leaf Mills Silos was one of two silo complexes that built the area between Spadina Quay and Maple Leaf Quay, on Toronto Harbour . It was also one of three silos that was found along Toronto s waterfront. The silos marked an age when goods were being shipped into Toronto. Towards the end, the silos also marked the ports decline and the desire to remove the industrial eyesore along Toronto s waterfront. History The first silo structure was opened in 1928 by the Toronto Elevator Company and built by Carter Construction Company, and was referred to as Playfair Elevators . Decline of Toronto Harbour and demise of the silos With the decline in use of Toronto harbour as a shipping centre in the 1980s and redevelopment of the waterfront, the future of the silos was set. When Maple Leaf Mills facility at Port Colborne was destroyed by fire in 1960, milling operations came to Toronto. The Port Colborne facilities were rebuilt at a smaller scale, but it eventually took over milling operations after 1983. Unlike the fate of the Victory Soya Mills and Canada Malting silos, the Maple Leaf Silos were demolished in the 1983 in the haste to remove the industrial eyesore and blight along the waterfront. Renewal In 1989 Harbour Terrace condominums was completed on half of the old silo site, but the remaining half of the site sat vacant.
