The MARS system uses High frequency HF and VHF radio frequencies near the official radio amateur bands to forward personal messages to and from military personnel. This emergencies communications system already proved to be very useful during mobilization or exercises. CAP stands for C ivil A ir P atrol. This is part a youth group supporting the air force and part domestic search and rescue auxiliary for the air force. The CAP system also use frequencies near the official radio amateur bands to coordinate searches and to relay messages. Formerly MARS operators belonged to a specialized branch of service, such as Army MARS, Air Force MARS or Navy Marine Corps MARS. Their mission was to provide auxiliary communications for that branch of service and included health and welfare for military personnel, marsgrams and phone patches. Radio amateurs hams can join the MARS CAP facility on a voluntary basis. They have to modify their transmit and receive equipment and extend their equipment to use the MARS CAP frequencies. Hams have a long history of volunteering to help in case of sudden shortage in communications. The modifications are only authorized for those formally affiliated with the MARS or CAP organization and the frequencies are for official use only.
