Seymour, seeks to recognize students living in the state of California who possess high standards in academic scholarship, community service and citizenship. Members of the California Scholarship Federation are eligible for a variety of tuition scholarship s available at universities across the state and in select colleges nationwide. Regional subcommittees nominate several members as Life Members based upon character, leadership abilities and volunteer service. Fifty of these students receive 1,500 each, and five of these one from each region of California are awarded an additional 1000 toward their college tuition. Since this is dredged up from a distance of 50 years please feel free to amend it. In 1960 I sat two S levels you could sit 1 or 2 in Chemistry and Pure Maths. I obtained grade 3 in both and was awarded a State Scholarship. As I had already won a County Scholarship based on A level results worth about 120 pa the State Scholarship was just an additional 50 pa. I have a very vague recollection that there were 1200 awarded annually nationwide. I have a similar recollection, although my memory of the number awarded each year is 2000. In my case 1966 9 The State Scholarship around 300 pa, but means tested was the only funding I received, as winning it invalidated my County Award. It paid all my maintenance costs. My College Scholarship 60 pa was unaffected. I also have a similar recollection. I sat two S levels in Pure Maths and Physics in 1959,I cannot recall actual grades but I got a distinction in Physics,and the State Scholarship was worth about 280. As the county, Wiltshire, did not have to provide the County Award, they gave me a book grant of 30. My grammar school,in a very working class town, obtained 6 such awards in 1959.
