Savaria Mithraeum was the shrine of Mithras in the Roman Empire Roman town of Savaria now Szombathely , Hungary which was discovered in 2008. History The cult of Mithras was popular in the Roman province of Pannonia . Archeological evidences proved its presence in Aquincum , Fert r kos and S rkeszi but its popularity in Savaria, the capital of Pannonia Prima was only proved in 2008 when a mithraeum was unearthed in the vicinity of the most important surviving Roman monument of the town, the shrine of Isis . The Savaria Mithraeum was used until the 4th century when it was burned down and collapsed. The mithraeum was discovered during the building works of a new shopping center in 2008. The remains were excavated by local archeologists who claimed that the discovery is of European importance. The ruins will be preserved in the basement of the new plaza. Many other finds were unearthed in the area like an intact Roman cellar and a 3 m wide, stone waterdrain that was repaired in the 19th century. Remains Two stone altars were uncovered which were decorated with scenes from the life of Mithras in reliefs and had dedicative inscriptions. The inner room and the narthex of the shrine was decorated with wall paintings. The frescoes are being restored by experts from the collected fragments. Their design were geometric with some figurative scenes. The ceiling was coffered. The ancient painters used expensive pigments like Egyptian Blue and vermilion . There were stone benches along the walls in the inner room. Image Gordijnen aan venster.JPG thumb right 200px Drapery. Drapery is a general word referring to cloth s or textile s Old French wikt draperie draperie , from Late Latin drappus ref Perhaps of Celtic languages Celtic origin OED . ref . It may refer to cloth used for decorative purposes &ndash such as around windows &ndash or to the trade of retailing cloth, originally mostly for clothing, formerly conducted by drapers. In art history , drapery refers to any cloth or textile depicted, which is usually mostly clothing. The schematic depiction of the folds and woven patterns of loose hanging clothing on the human form, with ancient prototypes, was reimagined as an adjunct to the female form by Greek vase painters and sculptors of the earliest fifth century and has remained a major source of stylistic formulas in sculpture and painting, even after the Renaissance adoption of tighter fitting clothing styles. After the Renaissance, large cloths with no very obvious purpose are often used decoratively, especially in portraits in the grand manner these are also known as draperies. Image Aquincum.jpg thumb right Aquincum site, Budapest File Aquincum esp.jpg thumb right Location of the city within the Roman Empire The ancient city of Aquincum was situated on the North Eastern borders of the Pannonia province within the Roman Empire . The ruins of the city can be found today in Budapest , the capital city of Hungary . It is believed that Marcus Aurelius may have written at least part of his book Meditations at Aquincum. Originally settled by the Eravisci , a Celts Celtic tribe, Aquincum served as a military base castrum , having been part of the Roman border protection system called limes . Around AD 41 54, a 500 strong cavalry unit arrived, and a Roman legion of 6,000 men was stationed here by AD 89. The city gradually grew around the fortress, and after Pannonia was reorganised by the Romans in AD 106, Aquincum became the capital city of Pannonia Inferior . The city had around 30,000 to 40,000 inhabitants by the end of the 2nd century, and covered a significant part of the area today known as the buda district within Budapest. Ruins from the old Roman settlement can be seen in other parts of Budapest as well, notably Contra Aquincum and the Amphitheatre. People living in the settlement could enjoy the achievements of the Empire, like central heating in the houses, Thermae public baths , Aquincum Mithraeum of Victorinus a Mithraeum and palaces, as well as amphitheatre s for gladiatorial combats and beast fights. Professor William Francis Grimes 31 October 1905 &ndash 25 December 1988 was a Wales Welsh archaeologist who devoted his career to the archaeology of London and the Prehistoric Wales prehistory of Wales . Born in Pembrokeshire , Wales, he received his education at the University of Wales . He held a number of prominent posts in Wales, including Chairman of the Royal Commission for Ancient Monuments in Wales. He published two influential volumes on the prehistory of Wales, with a particular interest in the Neolithic . During the 1950s and 60s Grimes carried out dozens of excavations in the city of London in his capacity as director of both the Museum of London and the Institute of Archaeology , the institution within the University of London founded by Sir Mortimer Wheeler in 1937. Grimes most famous discovery was the Temple of Mithras, London London Mithraeum in 1954, a Roman temple to the god Mithras , uncovered during rebuilding work on a central London bomb site off Walbrook . Although the site was built over, Grimes succeeded in salvaging many of its finds and features including marble statuary attesting to the wealth of its congregation. As a result of public pressure a replica temple was rebuilt elsewhere. Published works Grimes, W.
