Thomas Molson was educated in private schools and apprenticed to the brewing brewery trade. On becoming a partner in John Molson & Sons in 1816, he took over the management of the family s brewery operations. After an unprofitable venture into Distillation distilling in 1822, he withdrew from the partnership and settled in Kingston, Ontario Kingston, Upper Canada , where he engaged in extensive brewing and distilling operations from 1824 to 1835. In 1836 he returned to Montreal to resume management of the family business. Under the firm name of Thomas & William Molson it became one of the leading distilleries in North America. When William Molson retired in 1852 to establish Molson Bank , Thomas acquired sole ownership of the distilling interests and his son, John Henry Robinson Molson, became owner of the brewery. Thomas Molson was a benefactor of McGill University and the Montreal General Hospital . He also built a private church, St. Thomas, and a theological college. In 1816 he wed Martha Molson 1795 1848 , daughter of Thomas Molson 1768 1803 and Anne Atkinson 1765 1813 . Thomas and Martha had at least eleven children before her death in 1848. He was a director of many important Canadian corporations and a generous benefactor of McGill University and the Montreal General Hospital. William was the only son of Dr. William Alexander Molson & Esther Shepherd. After some months in the 20th Reserve Battalion in England, he proceeded to the 42nd Battalion, Black Watch , in France. He gained the rank of Captain and was awarded the Military Cross for distinguished service during the First World War at the Battle of Arras in 1918. He was one of thirty four Molson family members to serve in WWI five were killed and thirteen wounded. Captain Molson moved to Victoria, British Columbia in 1925 with his wife and son Andrew, In 1926 Mrs. Molson died giving birth to 2nd son, David Molson. Captain Molson served as an Aide de Camp to Lt. Governor R. Randolph Bruce from 1926 to 1931. He re married in 1931 to Bruce s niece, Madge Mackenzie, who had acted as her uncle s hostess. Born June 5, 1826, son of Thomas Molson 1791 1863 & Martha Molson 1795 1848 , at Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Jackey , as he was affectionately known, was educated in Montreal public schools. Inheriting the Molson Brewery in 1847 under the terms of his grandfather s will, he became associated with its management. In 1852 he entered into partnership with his father to conduct their separately owned brewing and distilling enterprises. Operations were continued after 1863 by John H.R. Molson and other brothers. On the retirement of John Thomas Molson in 1866, distilling was abandoned but the brewery continued under John H.R. Molson and Adam Skaife. In 1879 Molson was made a director of Molson Bank and was forthwith elected vice president, and later president, 1889 97. Other interests included the Montreal Street Railway, the City and District Bank and the Scottish Life Assurance Co. He was a life governor of the Montreal General Hospital, a generous benefactor of McGill University and a founder of the Verdun Protestant Hospital for the Insane. In 1873 John was wed to Louisa Goddard Frothingham 1827 1910 , daughter of hardware entrepreneur, John Frothingham. John & Louisa had no children. John died in 1897 at Montreal from nephritis. Former Director of Molson Bank, President of the Champlain and St. Lawrence Railroad Canada s first railway , and President of Montreal General Hospital. Born October 14th, 1787, son of John Molson 1763 1836 & Sarah Vaughn 1751 1829 , at Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Though he was apprenticed to the brewing trade and became a partner in the family brewery in 1816, Molson was primarily a financier. The family monopoly of river transport enabled him, as owner of the Swiftsure, to engage in profitable banking operations during the War of 1812 14, buying bills of exchange at heavy discount in Montreal and disposing of them at a profit in Quebec. He became a director of the Bank of Montreal shortly after its foundation and was vice president of Molson s Bank from its incorporation in 1855. He was a promoter of the Champlain and St. Lawrence Railroad, Canada s first railway, and became its president in 1837. His other interests included the first Montreal water works and gas company, fire insurance and various industrial enterprises. He succeeded his father as a life governor, vice president and president of the Montreal General Hospital.
