Historically a major producer of sugar and tobacco , the eruptions of the Soufri re Hills between 1995 and 1997 severely damaged infrastructure across a large part of the island. Much of the arable land was destroyed during eruptions or now falls within an exclusion zone , leaving only limited sections on the northern region of the island usable for tillage cultivation . Agriculture plays little role in the island s Economy of Montserrat economy , as most of the economic activity since the eruptions is generated by service jobs Tourism in Montserrat tourism , government and construction . Music For Montserrat was a concert held on 15 September 1997 at the Royal Albert Hall . Musicians came together to raise funds for the Caribbean island of Montserrat after a major volcanic eruption by the Soufri re Hills volcano earlier that year left the island, including its capital city capital of Plymouth, Montserrat Plymouth , devastated. The concert starred musicians such as Phil Collins , Ray Cooper , Carl Perkins , Jimmy Buffett , Mark Knopfler , Sting musician Sting , Elton John , Eric Clapton , Paul McCartney , Midge Ure , Arrow singer Arrow and many more, all of whom had once recorded at the island s famous AIR Studios .
