For other uses and meanings see Blackshirts disambiguation . Blackshirts are members of the anti religious atheist quasi political organization Dravidar Kazhagam in Tamil Nadu , founded by Periyar Ramasami Periyar E V Ramasamy . The members wear black shirts to mock and protest the saffron vestments of Hindu religious leaders, and sadhus as black is generally associated with death and bad luck as opposed to saffron s auspicious association. This has its origins when black flags as a protest tool were banned in Tamil Nadu and the members wore black outfits to circumvent this ban. Black shirts and black flags were also seen as a symbol of anarchy in southern India especially in Tamil Nadu during the early 20 century. Amphitryon is an English language comedy by John Dryden which is based on Moli re s Amphitryon Moli re 1668 play of the same name which was in turn based on the story of the Greek mythological character Amphitryon as told by Plautus in Amphitryon play his play from ca. 190 185 B.C . Dryden s play, which focuses on themes of sexual morality and power, premiered in London in 1690. Notable innovations in Dryden s adaptation compared to previous plays on Amphitryon included music by Henry Purcell and the character of Phaedra mythology Phaedra , who flirts with Sosia but is eventually won over by Mercury s promises of wealth. Although popular with the public, Dryden s play was attacked by Jeremy Collier in his 1698 pamphlet entitled A Short View of the Immortality of the Stage for undermining social mores and attacking the political values of his day. The work was later altered significantly by John Hawkesworth book editor John Hawkesworth for a production in 1756, with him removing what he considered the morally objectionable material. The story is divided into seventeen chapters written using the Narrative mode Third person view third person narrative mode interspersed between them are a number of interludes all entitled The Observations of the Green Mare which are written as Narrative mode Third person view first person narratives . These two different narrative modes used throughout the book allow the reader to observe the characters and situations from slightly different perspectives. The novel is essentially an examination of the sexual mores and behaviors of the members of a small 19th century French village some time shortly following the Franco Prussian War . The plot concerns a feud that has taken place for generations between the Hadouin and Maloret families, and a missing letter that contains revealing secrets relating to the conflict. The green mare of the title is in fact a magical painting of an unusually colored horse owned by one of the Hadouins that has somehow been imbued with an observing consciousness by the artist who painted it. It is an early Cherryh novel about colonists on an alien world and their interactions with the catlike natives, centering on a young engineer sent to solve the colonists problems, and his relationship with the young native cat woman in scanty clothing on the cover. Major themes in this novel include sexual liberation, sexual aberration, relevance of social mores, hypocrisy of social mores, personal work ethic, personal responsibility, ecological responsibility, blame shifting, bureaucratic inertia, administrative reflex reactions, the mindset of the engineering profession, and responsibility toward indigenous peoples. Some readers may find the main character similar to Sten Duncan of the Faded Sun Trilogy . Many other characters and the world itself are not developed with as much depth as those in some of Cherryh s other early works, such as Gate of Ivrel , The Pride of Chanur , Merchanter s Luck , and The Dreamstone novel The Dreamstone . Notably, the alien cat people in this novel are entirely different from the hani of the Chanur novels, being in temperament and culture somewhat more like housecats than lions.
