The family was originally Scottish, being related to James Mossman a prominent jeweller and supporter of Mary, Queen of Scots who was beheaded after the Long Siege of Edinburgh Castle in 1572. Mossman sculpted the now iconic William Shakespeare and Robert Burns statues currently residing in the Citizens Theatre foyer, Glasgow as well as four muses , also in the foyer. His work can also be seen in the statues that adorn the Atheneum off Royal Exchange Square. John Mossman s is the distinctive hand in Glasgow s public statues of the latter half of the 19th century, and a number of works for the Glasgow Necropolis . Mossman studied at Coe College for two years, finished college at the University of Iowa and received his M.F.A. from the Iowa Writers Workshop in 1969. His novel, The Stones of Summer , was published by Bobbs Merrill in 1972 and Popular Library a year later. Following the publication of The Stones of Summer , Dow was mentally exhausted and spent several months in an Iowa sanitorium. The novel soon went out of print.     orphan date May 2010 The Mossman Lock Museum is housed at the General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen of the City of New York building, located at 20 West 44th Street in midtown Manhattan which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places . The museum houses one of the largest collections of bank and Bank vault Lock vault lock s in the world, with more than 370 locks, keys and tools dating from 4000 BC to the modern 20th century. Egyptian wooden pin locks, Chinese padlock s, American time lock s, etc., are all displayed in lighted glass cases on the second floor of the General Society. Alongside the cases are studded trunks, with cleverly concealed keyhole s, once used by bankers. Many of the examples are unique, made to order locks that were not produced in commercial quantities and nearly every lock has protected millions in money and securities. To augment the lock collection. Mr. Mossman donated his notes and scrapbooks, known as the Mossman Papers , which have proven to be a valuable resource for the study of locks. The Lure of the Lock was published in 1928 and describes each lock in the collection. Collections of various Antebellum era antebellum curios, rare books, prints, flags, clocks and medals have also been donated by friends and members.
