    The University of the Visual & Performing Arts lang ta , is the only university of visual art s in Sri Lanka . Established in July 2005, its campus is situated in Colombo . History The precursor of the University of the Visual and Performing Arts was the Ceylon Technical College , established in 1893. Its Department of Arts and Aesthetics moved from Horton Place to Haywood College on 1 October 1949. The institution was renamed School of Art and awarded a diploma in Fine Arts after its six year course. On 2 July 1952, the institution was again renamed as the Government College of Fine Arts and began instruction in singing and acting. The departments of Music and Dance were started in Colombo, and the school was renamed the College of Fine Arts . After the First University Act of 1972, the College of Fine Arts become the Institute of Aesthetic Studies of the University of Ceylon in 1974. In 1978, 63 students received the Bachelor of Arts degree. The restructuring of the university system in Sri Lanka affiliated of the institute to the University of Kelaniya in 1980. A Special Gazette Notice formally announced the creation of the University of the Visual and Performing Arts on 1 July 2005. Sarath Amunugama was assigned as First Vice Chancellor. Aims This university was founded to promote and develop the visual and creative arts as well as to offer recognized higher education qualifications in these areas of study.
