Sydney Emanuel Mudd I February 12, 1858 &ndash October 21, 1911 was an United States American politician. Born at Gallant Green , in Charles County, Maryland , Mudd attended Georgetown University and graduated from St. John s College, U.S. St. John s College of Annapolis, Maryland , in 1878. He studied law privately and also attended the law department of the University of Virginia at Charlottesville, Virginia Charlottesville . He was admitted to the bar in 1880 and commenced practice. Career Mudd was elected a member of the Maryland House of Delegates in 1879 and 1881. As a Republican candidate, he successfully contested the election of Barnes Compton from the Maryland s 5th congressional district fifth district of Maryland to the Fifty first Congress. The court decided in his favor he had filed charges of election fraud and he served from March 20, 1890, to March 3, 1891. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1890 to the Fifty second Congress, when Compton was re elected. Mudd was elected again to the state House of Delegates in 1895, where he served as speaker. Mudd moved to La Plata, Maryland in 1896. He served as a delegate to the Republican National Convention the same year. He was elected again from the fifth district to the Fifty fifth and to the six succeeding Congresses, serving from March 4, 1897 to March 3, 1911. Born at Gallant Green in Charles County, Maryland , Mudd attended the public schools of Charles County and the District of Columbia . He moved with his parents to La Plata, Maryland , in 1896, and graduated from the academic department of Georgetown University in 1906 and from the law department in 1909. He was an unsuccessful candidate for election to the Maryland House of Delegates in 1909. Mudd was admitted to the bar in 1910 and served as professor of criminal law at Georgetown University Law School in 1910. He was appointed assistant district attorney of the District of Columbia in February 1911 and resigned in March 1911. He was an unsuccessful candidate for nomination in 1912 for election to the Sixty third Congress, and was reappointed assistant district attorney in July 1912, resigning again in March 1914 to become a candidate for Congress. He was elected from the Maryland s 5th congressional district fifth district of Maryland as a Republican to the Sixty fourth and to the four succeeding Congresses, serving from March 4, 1915 until his death in Baltimore, Maryland .
