  1. Geographic information retrieval

Cleanup reason this article features poor external link use, lots of non notable facts, and industry lingo with no explanation date February 2012 Geographic information retrieval GIR or geographical information retrieval is the augmentation of information retrieval with geographic Metadata computing metadata . Information retrieval generally views documents as a collection or bag of words. In contrast, geographic information retrieval requires a small amount of semantic data to be present namely a location or geographic feature associated with a document . Because of this it is common in GIR to separate the text indexing and analysis from the geographic indexing. GIR systems can commonly be broken down into the following stages GeoTagging , text and Geographic indexing, data storage, geographic relevance ranking wrt a geographic query and browsing results commonly with a map interface . GIR systems GIR involves extracting and resolving the meaning of locations in unstructured text. This is known as Geoparsing . A few tools offer this kind of capabilities, including http www.digitalreasoning.com GeoLocator and MetaCarta s http www.metacarta.com solutions products geotagger.html GeoTagger . After identifying location references in text, a GIR system must index this information for search and retrieval. 1. Canada Geographic Information System

The Canada Geographic Information System CGIS was developed in the 1960s and 1970s to assist in regulatory procedures of land management land use management and resource monitoring. At that time, Canada was beginning to realize problems associated with its seemingly endless boundaries, in combination with natural resource availability. The government therefore decided to launch a national program to assist in management and inventory of its resources. The simple automated computer processes designed to store and process large amounts of data enabled Canada to begin a national land use management program and become a foremost promoter of geographic information system s GIS . CGIS was designed to withstand great amounts of collected data by managing, modeling, and analyzing this data very quickly and accurately. As Canada presented such large dataset s, it was necessary to be able to focus on certain regions or Canadian provinces provinces in order to more effectively manage and maintain land use. CGIS enabled its users to effectively collect national data and, if necessary, break it down into provincial datasets. 1. Historical geographic information system

A historical geographic information system also written as historical GIS or HGIS is a geographic information system that may display, store and analyze data of past geographies and track changes in time. It can be regarded as a subfield of historical geography and geographic information science . GIS was originally developed for use in environmental science s, military and for computer assisted cartography . The tools developed for these uses are ill suited for the features of historical data. Theoretical issues in HGIS While most data made available to GIS systems are relatively precise and collected by using technology like Remote sensing or Techniques used in HGIS Digitization and georeferencing of historical maps. Old maps may contain valuable information about the past. By adding coordinates to such maps, they may be added as a feature layer to modern GIS data. This facilitates comparison of different map layers showing the geography at different times. The maps may be further enhanced by techniques such as rubbersheeting , which spatially warps the data to fit with more accurate modern maps. Reconstruction of past boundaries.
