The United Kingdom , the Russia Russian Federation and Canada are viewed as present day examples of multinational states, while Austria Hungary , the USSR and Yugoslavia are examples of historical multinational states which have since split into a number of sovereign states. A multinationalstate need not also be multiculturalism multicultural . Generally, in the early modern era, multinational states proved to be less successful than nation states. Infobox Book name State by State A Panoramic Portrait of America image author Matt Weiland and Sean Wilsey , eds. publisher Harper Collins language English language English genre Non fiction release date 2008 media type Print Hardcover , Paperback isbn 9780061470905 State by State A Panoramic Portrait of America is a collection of pieces about the United States of America , with one essay on each of the fifty states. It was conceived of and edited by Matt Weiland and Sean Wilsey . Background Weiland and Wilsey stated that they were inspired by the Federal Writers Project of the 1930 s, in which the US government helped to create jobs by sending writers across the country and commissioning pieces on their sights and experiences. The two previously edited Thinking Fan s Guide to the World Cup , in which they commissioned 32 authors to write pieces on the 32 countries competing in the 2006 World Cup they decided a similar approach could be taken with the United States. Both Weiland and Wilsey decided that they wanted a mixture of approaches for the collection while several well known authors eg, Ha Jin , Jhumpa Lahiri , Dave Eggers were included, they deliberately avoided certain authors that were closely associated with a particular state for instance, Garrison Keillor with Minnesota , or Carl Hiaasen with Florida . The collection has a mix of familiarity, with some authors writing about places in which they have lived their entire lives, while others visited the state for the first time. Unreferenced date June 2011 The Sovereign State 1973, ISBN 0 340 17195 2 is a book by Anthony Sampson that uses the example of ITT Corporation ITT International Telephone and Telegraph to make a broader point about the weakening of the authority of traditional national governments by the multinational corporation s. Plot In part it was a portrait of Harold Geneen , the chief executive of ITT from 1959 until 1977. Geneen was a legendarily hands on manager, who believed it necessary to penetrate through layers of false facts to get to the unshakable facts about any of the markets or divisions of his conglomerate. In terms of its broader themes, though, this book was one of a spate of early 70s books that promoted the thesis that multinational corporations were taking over the traditional prerogatives and functions of national governments. In a review of Sampson s book in the London Sunday Telegraph , Sir Frank McFadzean , Vice Chairman of Royal Dutch Shell Royal Dutch Shell , took issue with that thesis. Such corporation s are prisoners of their past investments, he wrote, because even the most puny government can nationalization nationalize , and the only redress is to seek compensation. Although as Sampson s book shows ITT has used other means of redress to defend its own business interests from nationalisation, that have not been confined to the courts. These have ranged from supporting the 1930 s military takeover by General Franco in Spain, investing in Hitler s war machine throughout WWII and funding a CIA backed coup led by General Pinochet in Chile 1973.
