A fragment separator is an Ion optics ion optical device used to focus and separate products from the collision of relativistic ion beams with thin targets. Selected products can then be studied individually. Fragment separators typically consist of a series of superconducting magnetic multipole elements. The thin target immediately before the separator allows the fragments produced through various reactions to escape the target material still at a very high velocity. The products are forward focused because of the high velocity of the center of mass in the beam target interaction, which allows fragment separators to collect a large fraction in some cases nearly all of the fragments produced in the target. Some examples of currently operating Fragment separators are the FRS Fragment Separator FRS at Gesellschaft f r Schwerionenforschung GSI , the A1900 at National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory NSCL , and BigRIPS at RIKEN . An acentric fragment is a Segment biology segment of a chromosome that lacks a centromere . ref Acentric Fragment, In Sydney Brenner and Jeffrey H. Miller, Editor s in Chief, Encyclopedia of Genetics , Academic Press, New York, 2001, Page 2, ISBN 978 0 12 227080 2, 10.1006 rwgn.2001.1750. ref Because the centromere is the point of attachment for the mitotic apparatus, acentric fragments are not evenly distributed to the daughter cell s in cell division mitosis and meiosis . As a result one of the daughters will lack the acentric fragment. Lack of the acentric fragment in one of the daughter cells may have deleterious consequences, depending on the function of the DNA in this region of the chromosome. In the case of a haploid organism or a gamete , it will be fatal if essential DNA is contained in that DNA segment. In the case of a diploid organism, the daughter cell lacking the acetric fragment will show expression of any recessive genes found in the homologous chromosome. Developmental geneticists look to cells and cell lineages lacking unpaired chromosome segments produced this way as a means of identifying essential genes for specific functions. Acentric fragments are commonly generated by chromosome breaking events, such as irradiation . Acentric fragments can also be produced when an inverted segment is present in one member of a chromosome pair. In that case, a crossover event will result in one chromosome with two centromeres and an acentric fragment. The acentric fragment will be lost as explained above, and chromosomes with two centromeres will break unevenly during mitosis, resulting in one daughter lacking essential genes. ref cite book title Introduction to Genetic Analysis Looseleaf publisher Macmillan year 2008 isbn 978 1 4292 3323 1 http books.google.com books?id GmGpgu1VWe8C&pg PA581&dq 22Acentric Fragment 22&lr &as brr 3&client firefox a Google Book Preview ref references Category Classical genetics ... more details

The Sisyphus fragment is a 42 line excerpt in iambic trimeter from an ancient Greek satyr play written either by Euripides or Critias . In Diels Kranz , it is 88 B 25, attributed to Critias. The words are spoken by Sisyphus , a character in the play. The play itself is no longer extant. But Sextus Empiricus preserved the excerpt in full for us by quoting it in his Against the Mathematicians 9.54 other ancient writers, apparently independently of Sextus, refer to and or quote parts of the excerpt. It is the oldest known account of a Naturalism philosophy naturalistic evolution of religion . It expresses an atheistic viewpoint by founding religion not in a valid belief in divinity, but in a man made device for getting people to obey the law out of fear of divine punishment for transgressions. Authorship Sextus attributes the lines to Critias, as do other ancient authors. Recently, modern scholars e.g., Dihle 1977, Kahn 1997 have increasingly begun to question this identification, attributing the lines instead to Euripides , who is known to have written a play now lost titled Sisyphus , and who more importantly is identified by other ancient writers as the author of the fragment. File Mazeppa 1st edition 1819.jpg thumb Fragment of a Novel first appeared in the Mazeppa collection, John Murray, London, 1819. Fragment of a Novel is an unfinished 1819 vampire horror story written by Lord Byron . The story, also known as A Fragment and The Burial A Fragment , was one of the first in English to feature a vampire theme. The main character was Augustus Darvell. John William Polidori based his novella The Vampyre 1819 on the Byron fragment. The vampire in the Polidori story, Lord Ruthven, was modeled on Byron himself. The story was the result of the meeting that Byron had in 1816 with Percy Bysshe Shelley where a ghost writing contest was proposed. This contest was also what led to the creaton of Mary Shelley s Frankenstein . The story is important in the development and evolution of the vampire story in English literature. A restriction fragment is a DNA fragment resulting from the cutting of a DNA strand by a restriction enzyme restriction endonucleases , a process called restriction. Each restriction enzyme is highly specific, recognising a particular short DNA sequence, or restriction site, and cutting both DNA strands at specific points within this site. Most restriction sites are Palindromic sequence palindromic , the sequence of nucleotides is the same on both strands when read in the 5 to 3 direction , and are four to eight nucleotide s long. Many cuts are made by one restriction enzyme because of the chance repetition of these sequences in a long DNA molecule, yielding a set of restriction fragments. A particular DNA molecule will always yield the same set of restriction fragments when exposed to the same restriction enzyme. Restriction fragments can be analyzed using techniques such as gel electrophoresis or used in recombinant DNA technology. Image Restriction enzyme.jpg thumb Illustration of typical restriction enzyme cleavage. In recombinant DNA technology specific restriction endonucleases are used that will isolate a particular gene and cleave the sugar phosphate backbones at different points retaining symmetry , so that the double stranded restriction fragments have single stranded ends. These short extensions, called sticky ends can form hydrogen bond ed base pairs with complementary sticky ends on any other DNA cut with the same enzyme such as a bacterial plasmid . In agarose gel electrophoresis , the restriction fragments yield a band pattern characteristic of the original DNA molecule and restriction enzyme used, for example the relatively small DNA molecules of viruses and plasmids can be identified simply by their restriction fragment patterns. If the nucleotide differences of two different allele s occur within the restriction site of a particular restriction enzyme, digestion of segments of DNA from individuals with different alleles for that particular gene with that enzyme ... more details

He has been clean for about a year. He had recently become acquainted with his aunt Robson , a philanthropist who expresses interest in helping some of Tim s former acquaintances. She is found murdered soon after. Tim starts a relationship with Juliet Hunnicutt , the woman who found his aunt s body, and they are soon engaged. Dissatisfied with the progress that the police are making in his aunt s murder case, he begins to ask questions of some of his aunt s acquaintances. He then begins to receive warnings from unknown persons to stop his inquiries. He meets an elderly woman on the train. She hands him a note of supposed comfort, asking him to read it at home. The note turns out to be a warning about leaving matters to the police, apparently typed on his own typewriter. There s also an ominous laugh recorded on Tim s own tape recorder, indicating that someone had been in his apartment. Tim is then visited by a police sergeant, Sgt. Matthews, who informs him that the woman on the train ... Moon Schoolgirl References reflist External links imdb title id 0065737 title Fragment of Fear ... more details
