Aztec medicine concerns the body of knowledge, belief and ritual surrounding human health and sickness, as observed among the Nahuatl speaking peoples in the Aztec realm of central Mexico during the pre and post Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire conquest eras . A variety of indigenous Nahua peoples Nahua and Viceroyalty of New Spain Novohispanic written works survive from the conquest and later colonial periods that describe aspects of the Aztec system and practice of medicine and its remedies, incantations, practical administration, and cultural underpinnings. Elements of traditional medicinal practices and beliefs are still found among modern day Nahua communities, often intermixed with European or other later influences. As with many other Mesoamerica n cultures, the Aztec system recognised three main causes of illness and injuries supernatural causes involving the displeasure of the gods or excess and imbalance with the supernatural and natural worlds, magical causes involving malevolent curses and magician paranormal sorcerers a tlacatecolotl in Nahuatl , and natural or practical causes. Establishing a treatment for any given ailment depended first upon determining the nature of its cause. Disease had an ambivalent or dualistic aspect, representing an imbalanced state but at the same time its presence could indicate the existence of a communion with the supernatural world. The Aztecs knew of and used an extensive inventory consisting of hundreds of different medicinal herb s and plants. References refbegin indent yes BEGIN biblio format. Tepetlaoztoc or Tepetlaoxtoc Nahuatl for tepetate cave place is an archaeological site located in the Central Mexico plateau region of Mesoamerica , which was formerly an Aztec Nahua peoples Nahua settlement during the Late Postclassic period of Mesoamerican chronology , with an occupancy continuing through the Colonial period. The site is situated in the Valley of Mexico , to the northeast of Texcoco Aztec site Texcoco . In the 1970s the area was relatively undeveloped, and one could, on aerial photographs, still discern the 16th century field lines and irrigation system drawn in the Codex of Santa Maria Asuncion manuscript in the Biblioteca Nacional and the Codex Vergara. Likewise one could locate many of the aldeas that were tributary to Tepetlaoztoc, and still find the wall bases of their houses. By the time of Sander s work in the 1990s, development had largely destroyed these remnants. Aztec The altepetl IPA nah al tepet , in Pre Columbian and Spanish conquest of Mexico Spanish conquest era Aztec Aztec society society , was the local, Ethnicity ethnically based political entity. The word is a combination of the Nahuatl language Nahuatl words tl , meaning water, and tep tl , meaning mountain. Nahuatl scholars Lisa Sousa , Stafford Poole , and James Lockhart historian James Lockhart have stated blockquote A characteristic Nahua peoples Nahua mode was to imagine the totality of the people of a region or of the world as a collection of altepetl units and to speak of them on those terms. ref Sousa et al. 1998, p. 36 ref blockquote They prefer the Nahuatl term over any English language English language approximation. They argue that in many of the documents pertaining to the Our Lady of Guadalupe Virgin of Guadalupe , the word ltep tl is often used as a translation of the Spanish language Spanish Ciudad de M xico Mexico City , a translation that has colored the interpretation of the texts and conceptions of Nahua society. The concept is comparable to Maya civilization Maya cah and Mixtec uu .
