The demonstrators picketed outside while midnight mass was being celebrated inside. While Los Angeles Archbishop James Francis McIntyre celebrated mass inside, the demonstrators, who were conducting a prayer vigil, were confronted by off duty sheriffs and a Los Angeles Police Department riot squad who warned them about entering the building and disrupting the service. When police descended on the crime scene, they entered the house and assumed the suspects were hiding in the attic after which they flooded the building with tear gas as a helicopter hovered overhead they sent a fire truck ladder up to the roof to facilitate the search while officer Brodnik s corpse lay untended on the sidewalk local press reports .
