Multiple issues orphan May 2010 unreferenced May 2010 notability May 2010 The Uganda Program on Cancer and Infectious Diseases UPCID , established in 2004, is a joint program between Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle and the Uganda Cancer Institute . The program works to understand and treat infection related cancers in the United States and abroad. The UPCID Clinic and Training Center is located at Makerere University Medical School on the campus of Mulago Hospital in Kampala , Uganda. Leadership Collaboration The collaboration is co led by Corey Casper, a physician scientist at the Hutchinson Center and Jackson Orem, director of the Uganda Cancer Institute. Funding In October 2009 the United States Agency for International Development awarded a 500,000 grant to the Hutchinson Center to aid in the construction of the first American cancer clinic and medical training facility in Africa . Plans By 2012 it is expected that seven Ugandan physician scientists will have received yearlong training fellowships at the Hutchinson Center. The Hutchinson Center also plans to send up to 20 of its faculty members to Uganda by 2014 as part of a faculty exchange program. Researchers in oncology , infectious disease and epidemiology will provide training in a wide variety of subjects to Ugandan clinicians and scientists . They also will have the opportunity to initiate research projects in collaboration with Ugandan researchers.
