They are sanctioned by the International LifeSaving Federation ILS , conducted every 2 years, and commonly marketed and known as the Rescue series, for example Rescue 2008 . The World Lifesaving Championships incorporate 3 World Championships The World National Teams LifeSaving Championships for athletes selected to represent their country the World Interclub Lifesaving Championships for athletes who are competing for, and representing their clubs and the World Masters LifeSaving Championships for athletes over the age of 30. Founded in 1971 WLS conducted ocean and beach based world championships for National Teams in South Africa in 1974 and Interclub World Championships in 1981 and 1983. The 1988, 1990, and 1992 Rescue series of World Championship events were also organised by WLS. In 1956 prior to the advent of WLS, as part of the 1956 Olympic Games celebrations Surf Lifesaving Australia a founding member of WLS hosted an International Lifesaving Championships at Torquay Beach in which teams from several countries competed against each other. It could be argued that this was the first World Lifesaving Championships for ocean and beach events. Founded in 1910, member nations of FIS agreed to conduct World Championships in pool lifesaving events. The first such championships were conducted in Paris, France in 1955 and were held sporadically over the next 40 years until the final FIS Championships in 1995. These contests were strictly for national representative teams only. Since 1996, World LifeSaving Championships have been conducted solely by ILS every two years. Context date October 2009 Unreferenced date March 2007 The surf lifesaving reel was beach lifesaving apparatus from Australia . The reel was originally invented at Bondi Beach by Lyster Ormsby and then was later that year redesigned by G H Olding. It was a giant reel with rope wrapped around it with a harness at the end. The reel rested in a frame that would rest on the sand. The life saver would attach the harness to his or her self then Human swimming swim out to the struggling bather surfer. Once they reached the patient they would attach the patient to the harness and another life saver on the beach would reel them in. The life saver in the water would tend to another patient or swim alongside the patient to reassure them if they were conscious or make sure that nothing went wrong if they were unconscious. The actual reel and rope would weigh about 50 60 pounds and was officially made part of the surf lifesaving community on Sunday 24 March 1906. The reel then was used in the British Isles shortly after being invented. One of the last places to accept the reel was Cairns in 1925. The reel was used up to 1993 where it was replaced by IRBs Inflatable boat Inflatable rescue Boats . The first person to be rescued using the reel was the famous aviator Charles Kingsford Smith . Kingsford Smith was awarded a Military Cross during World War I and was the first person to make a trans pacific flight to Australia and won the England to Australia air race and crashed during the same race some years later and his body was never found. The airport in Sydney is named after him. The surf lifesaving reel was especially useful during the disaster on the 6th of February 1938. This day at Bondi was given the name Black Sunday after the events that took place on that day. On this day a series of freak wave s hit the beach and washed about 300 bathers into rough surf conditions where most required assistance. 80 surf life savers equipped with 8 reels saved all but 4 swimmers that died ... more details
