President Harry S. Truman signed the act on July 26, 1947 aboard the Sacred Cow, the C 54 Skymaster Douglas VC 54C that served as Air Force One . The Air Force began operating as a separate service seven weeks later, on September 18, 1947. This act empowers the Indian Government Central Government and State Governments to detain a person to prevent him her from acting in any manner prejudicial to the security of India, the relations of India with foreign countries, the maintenance of public order, or the maintenance of supplies and services essential to the community it is necessary so to do. The act also gives power to the governments to detain a foreigner in a view to regulate his presence or expel from the country. Detention The maximum period of detention is 12 months.The order can also be made by the District Magistrate or a Commissioner of Police under their respective jurisdictions, but should report the fact to the State Government together with the grounds on which the order has been made.No such order shall remain in force for more than twelve days unless in the meantime, it has been approved by the State Government. Criticism The National Security Act along with other laws allowing preventive detention have come under wide criticism for their alleged misuse.     The Polish Resettlement Act 1947 was the first ever mass immigration legislation of the Parliament of the United Kingdom . It offered British citizenship to over 200,000 displaced Polish troops on British soil who had fought against Nazi Germany and opposed the Soviet takeover of their homeland. The act also supplied a labour force to the demands of war torn Britain. Background The Polish contribution to World War II was outstanding, and directly led to the Polish Resettlement Act 1947 and the formation of the Polish British community as it exists today.     The Transport Act 1947 c. 49 is an Act of Parliament Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom . Under it the railways, long distance road haulage and various other types of transport were acquired by the state and handed over to a new British Transport Commission for operation. The commission was responsible to the Department for Transport Ministry of Transport for general transport policy, which it exercised principally through financial control of a number of executives set up to manage specified sections of the industry under schemes of delegation.
