A Naval Academy is a national institution that provides undergraduate level education for prospective naval officer s. Naval training commonly took place only at sea until the 20th century, even if those ships were permanently moored. For example, both the France French cole Navale and the United Kingdom British BRNC only comparatively recently constructed their training establishments on shore, despite the history of those two navies almost contemporary with the establishment of those two nations air force colleges. This is in contrast to their military counterparts such as the cole Sp ciale Militaire de Saint Cyr and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst which, with their predecessors, have a history of a much more formal presence, in spite as in the British case of the Royal Navy being the service that was both senior and historically had commanded the lion s share of state funds for defence purposes. Some State polity states may combine all officer training for their armed forces into one college. This is particularly true where economies of scale mean that it is impractical to have separate naval, military and air force academies this is the case in, for example, Singapore . It may also be the case in those few of the worlds states that have unified armed forces the most notable one being the Canadian Forces . Unreferenced date December 2009 History of war Naval tactics is the collective name for methods of engaging and defeating an enemy ship or Naval fleet fleet in battle at sea during naval warfare , the naval equivalent of military tactics on land. Naval military tactics tactics are distinct from naval strategy . Naval tactics are concerned with the movements a commander makes in battle, typically in the presence of the enemy. Naval strategy concerns the overall strategy for achieving victory and the large movements by which a commander secures the advantage of fighting at a place convenient to himself. The evolution of tactics at sea Naval tactics have evolved over time with developments in naval technology and the evolution of warships . The evolution of naval tactics can best be understood by dividing naval history into four eras Naval tactics in the Age of Galleys . Most naval battles have occurred at sea , but a few have taken place on lake s or river s. The earliest recorded naval battle took place in 1210 BC near Cyprus . There have been few large significant battles since World War II , as navies have taken on more of a policing role, performing search and rescue operations, enforcing trade sanctions, and fighting piracy and smuggling. Although the nature of the ships involved in battles has changed drastically, from trireme s to sailing ship s to battleship s, submarine s and aircraft carrier s, many of the Naval tactics tactical principles remain the same, such as the importance of manoeuvre before the engagement proper, and the desirability of breaking off combat rather than risking the complete loss of a fleet.
