  1. Negative luminescence

No footnotes date March 2012 Negative luminescence is a physical phenomenon by which an electronic device emits less thermal radiation when an electric current is passed through it than it does in thermal equilibrium current off . When viewed by a thermal camera , an operating negative luminescent device looks colder than its environment. Physics Negative luminescence is most readily observed in semiconductor s. Incoming infrared radiation is absorbed in the material by the creation of an electron hole pair . An electric field is used to remove the electrons and holes from the region before they have a chance to recombine and re emit thermal radiation. This effect occurs most efficiently in regions of low charge carrier density. Negative luminescence has also been observed in semiconductors in orthogonal electric and magnetic fields. In this case, the junction of a diode is not necessary and the effect can be observed in bulk material. A term that has been applied to this type of negative luminescence is galvanomagnetic luminescence . Negative luminescence might appear to be a violation of Kirchhoff s law of thermal radiation . This is not true, as the law only applies in thermal equilibrium . 1. Paper negative

The paper negative process consists of using a Negative photography negative printed on paper either photographically or digitally to create the final print of a photograph , as opposed to using a modern negative on a film base of cellulose acetate . The plastic acetate negative which is what modern films produce enables the printing of a very sharp image intended to be as close a representation of the actual subject as is possible. By using a negative based on paper instead, there is the possibility of creating a more ethereal image, simply by using a paper with a very visible grain, or by drawing on the paper, or distressing it in some way. One of the original forms of photography was based on the paper negative process. William Henry Fox Talbot Talbot s waxed paper negative process, which was used to create his work The Pencil of Nature , used a negative created on paper treated with silver salts, which was exposed in a camera obscura to create the negative and then contact printed on a similar paper to produce a Positive photography positive image. When Talbot created this process it was intended to be a way to reproduce nature as accurately as possible hence the name of his work, The Pencil of Nature . Through the years afterward, however, better and more accurate ways of producing exact replicas of nature were developed, and these processes relegated the paper negative process to obsolescence. The process of the paper negative is still relevant, though, in the realm of alternative process photography. Photographers employing alternative processes reject the idea of the exact replica of nature and seek to use the inherent inexactness of antiquated processes to create a more personal and emotional image. 1. Negative assurance

Negative assurance is a method used by the Certified Public Accountant to assure various parties, such as bankers and stockbrokers, that financial data under review by them is correct. Negative assurance tells the data user that nothing has come to the CPA s attention of an adverse nature or character regarding the financial data reviewed. This type of assurance is normally given to investment bankers and the SEC when the financial data are being used for stock and bond issuance. In addition, this assurance is given whenever a CPA is asked to comment on financial statements upon which a previous Audit Opinion has been rendered. This type of assurance is unacceptable for the basic financial statements on which a certifying audit has been performed. Negative assurance comments are made on unaudited financial statements and subsequent changes, indicating that nothing came to the auditor s attention that suggests the statements do not comply with applicable accounting requirements are not fairly presented in conformity with GAAP applied on a consistent basis or do not fairly present information shown therein. Negative assurance is given because the auditor has not made an examination in conformity with Generally Accepted Auditing Standards GAAS . Negative assurance is not appropriate unless the CPA has made an examination in accordance with GAAS for the accounting period before the current one. This is because the auditor needs evidence that can be related to comfort letter procedures. For negative assurance to be permissible, the evidence must have been gathered directly by the CPA giving the assurance, and not by another CPA. In a few countries the strategy is motivated by taxation systems which allow deduction of ongoing speculative losses against highly taxed income, but tax capital gains at a much lower rate. When income generated does cover the interest it is simply geared investment which creates a source of passive income . A negative gearing strategy can only make a Profit accounting profit if the asset rises so much in price that the capital gain is more than the sum of the ongoing losses over the life of the speculation. The speculator must also be able to fund the planned shortfall until the asset is sold. The different tax treatment of planned ongoing losses and possible future capital gains affects the investor s final return. This leads to a situation in the countries which tax capital gains at a lower rate than income. 1. Negative block

Unreferenced date December 2009 Orphan date December 2009 In policy debate , the negative block refers to the second negative constructive 2NC and the first negative rebuttal 1NR . Although the two speeches are divided by a three minute cross examination of the 2NC, they are given back to back without the interruption of an affirmative speech. This is a result of the affirmative having the first and last speech. Almost universally, negative teams will split the block by dividing the arguments between their speeches to avoid repeating themselves. Usually, the division will be based on flow policy debate flows , but sometimes based on second affirmative constructive 2AC arguments if there is a more compelling reason to divide arguments on flows. Often the 2NC and 1NR will go for different worlds of arguments, enabling the 2NR to go for only 2NC or only 1NR arguments, if the opportunity presents itself. Because the 1NR has the ability to answer arguments which were drop policy debate dropped by the 2NC, the cross examination of the 2NC will generally not emphasize dropped arguments. Also, because the cross examination provides de facto preparation time to the 1NR, some debaters will end the cross examination early if they have no important questions to ask. 1. Negative hyperconjugation

File NegativeHyperconjugation 8.svg thumb 350px A schematic representation of negative hyperconjugation. In real systems, several of the hydrogens are replaced with other functional groups. In organic chemistry , negative hyperconjugation is the donation of electron density from a filled or p orbital to a neighboring antibonding orbital sup sup orbital . ref http old.iupac.org goldbook NT07081.pdf ref This phenomenon, a type of resonance chemistry resonance , can stabilize the molecule or transition state . ref http www.scribd.com doc 54173058 46 Negative Hyperconjugation ref It also causes an elongation of the sigma bond bond by adding electron density to its antibonding orbital . ref http old.iupac.org goldbook NT07081.pdf ref Negative hyperconjugation is most commonly observed when the sup sup orbital is located on certain C F or C O bonds, ref http pubs.rsc.org en content articlelanding 2008 NJ b718430a ref ref http pubs.acs.org doi abs 10.1021 jo7017476 ref and does not occur to an appreciable extent with normal C H bonds. In negative hyperconjugation, the electron density flows in the opposite direction from or p orbital to empty sup sup orbital than it does in the more common hyperconjugation from orbital to empty p orbital .
