  1. Temporal discounting

Temporal discounting refers to the tendency of people to discount rewards as they approach a temporal horizon in the future or the past i.e., become so distant in time that they cease to be valuable or to have additive effects . To put it another way, it is a tendency to give greater value to rewards as they move away from their temporal horizons and towards the now . For instance, a nicotine deprived smoker may highly value a cigarette available any time in the next 6 hours but assign little or no value to a cigarette available in 6 months ref Impulsivity and cigarette smoking delay discounting in current, never, and ex smokers. Bickel, W. Odum, A., & Madden, G. Psychopharmacology. 1999 Oct 146 4 447 454. ref . This term is used in intertemporal economics, intertemporal choice , reward system neurobiology of reward and Decision making Neuroscience perspective decision making , microeconomics and recently neuroeconomics ref Cultural neuroeconomics of intertemporal choice. Takahashi, Taiki, Hadzibeganovic, Tarik, Cannas, Sergio A., Makino, T., Fukui, H., & Kitayama, Shinobu. Neuroendocrinology Letters. 2009 30 2 185 191. ref . It is also known as delay discounting or time discounting. Traditional models of economics assumed that the discounting function is exponential discounting exponential in time leading to a monotonic decrease in preference with increased time delay however, more recent neuroeconomic models suggest a hyperbolic discounting hyperbolic discount function which can address the phenomenon of preference reversal ref A Discounting framework for choice with delayed and probabilistic rewards. Myerson, J. & Green, L., 2004 Sept 130 5 769 792. ref Preference reversal Offered a choice of 100 today and 110 in a month, subjects might prefer to have 100 today. However, if the delay for both rewards is increased by a year i.e., subjects are offered a choice of 100 in a year or 110 in a year and one month , they might prefer the 110. fact date August 2010 See als ...   more details

Here are two examples of approaches How those two alternating emotions work for traders, and how they can distort their decision process, has been the subject of neuroeconomics studies 1 . Serving as an example is the research into the brain activity of salespeople, which can be detected through the use of fMRI scans. Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging fMRI is a technique that can trace the location in the brains where someone is processing information at the moment that he or she is faced with a stimulus e.g. interaction with a client . Thus, with the help of an fMRI scanner both the conscious as well as the unconscious brain processes can be traced. This study has been realized in cooperation with the Erasmus MC medical center and the University of Michigan . It has been published in the Journal of Marketing Research. 1. Biodemography

Biodemography is the science dealing with the integration of biology and demography . Biodemography is a new branch of human classical demography concerned with understanding the complementary biological and demographic determinants of and interactions between the birth and death processes that shape individuals, cohorts and population s. The biological component brings human demography under the unifying theoretical umbrella of evolution , and the demographic component provides an analytical foundation for many of the principles upon which evolutionary theory rests including Fitness biology fitness , selection , structure, and change. Whereas biodemographers are concerned with birth and death processes as they relate to populations in general and to humans in particular, population biologists specializing in life history theory are interested in these processes only insofar as they relate to fitness and evolution. For example, evolutionary biologists seldom focus on older, post reproductive s because these individuals it is typically argued do not contribute to fitness. In contrast, biodemographers embrace research programs expressly designed to study individuals at ages beyond their reproductive years because information on these age classes will shed important light on longevity and aging . The biological and demographic components of biodemography are not hierarchical but reciprocal in that both are primary windows on the world and are thus synergistic, complementary and mutually informing. Biodemography is unique in two respects. First , it is one of a small number of key subdisciplines arising from the social sciences that has embraced biology such as evolutionary psychology and neuroeconomics . However, unlike the others which focus more narrowly on biological sub areas neurology or concepts evolution , biodemography has no explicit biological boundaries. As a consequence, it is a more all encompassing interdisciplinary concept, but maintains deep biological ...   more details

  1. Neuroculture

Neologism date May 2011 Unreferenced date January 2011 NeuroCulture is the relation between the sciences that study the functioning of the brain and culture . We understanding the latter as the knowledge, history, habits, ideas and values of the human race, and their manifestations in any form of expression social, scientific, artistic, philosophical, moral or religious, etc. Image PurkinjeCell.jpg thumb right 200px Drawing by Santiago Ramon y Cajal of two types of Golgi stained neurons from the cerebellum of a pigeon The basis of NeuroCulture is that everything a human being creates is generated in the brain , from the most primary functions resulting from millions of years of evolution, to superior expressions, like art, religious or Scientific method scientific thinking . Thus, the link that relates the biological functioning of the brain to the results of its processes creates a method of explaining how human beings respond to their environment in every possible way. The study of human beings has been analysed by many scientific and humanistic branches of knowledge, such as philosophy , sociology , anthropology , psychology , theology , ethics , and jurisprudence . The understanding we have nowadays of the way the brain works makes it impossible for these disciplines to ignore that it is the brain that creates and organizes thoughts, which lead to data, deductions, structures, laws and, ultimately, the content that conforms them. Neuroscience , together with the humanistic and scientific disciplines, creates a new level of study that leads to a reassessment of some of its fields of study and, of course, the enrichment of all of them. According to this approach, in which Neuroscience joins the rest of the humanistic and scientific disciplines, new related terms appear. For example, we have Neuroeconomics NeuroEconomy , Neurophilosophy NeuroPhilosophy , NeuroEthics , Neurotheology NeuroTheology , Neuroesthetics NeuroEsthetics , Neurocognitive NeuroCognition or Neu ...   more details
