  1. Neuroendocrinology

lead too short date November 2010 morefootnotes date November 2010 Neuroendocrinology is the study of the extensive interactions between the nervous system and the endocrine system , including the biological features of the cells that participate, and how they functionally communicate. The nervous and endocrine systems often act together to regulate the physiological processes of the human body. Neuroendocrinology arose from the recognition that the brain, especially the hypothalamus , controls secretion of pituitary gland hormone s, and has subsequently expanded to investigate numerous interconnections of the endocrine and nervous systems. 1. Journal of Neuroendocrinology

The Journal of Neuroendocrinology , first published in 1989 is an academic journal that mainly publishes reports of original research in the field of neuroendocrinology , along with occasional review articles it claims to provide the principal international focus for the newest ideas in classical neuroendocrinology vertebrate and invertebrate and its expanding interface with the regulation of behavioural, cognitive, developmental, degenerative and metabolic processes. http www.blackwellpublishing.com journal.asp?ref 0953 8194&site 1 History of The Journal The Journal is owned and managed by the British Society for Neuroendocrinology BSN , and published on its behalf by Blackwell Publishing . It is now also an official journal of the European Neuroendocrine Association and of the International Neuroendocrine Federation . Profits from the journal are used mainly to support international conferences in neuroendocrinology. The editor in chief is appointed by the committee of the BSN, and reports to the committee and membership of the BSN. Professor Stafford Lightman of the University of Bristol was the first Editor in chief, and an internationally diverse editorial board, of more than 30 members. He has been succeeded by Gareth Leng from 1997 to 2004 and the present Editor in Chief, Julia Buckingham of Imperial College , London. Editorial policies Customary peer review policies for scientific journals are followed. When a manuscript is submitted to The Journal, it sent for review to two or three independent experts, often including members of the editorial board. Decisions on whether to accept the manuscriptare made by the Editor in Chief or her nominated Deputies in the light of the referees reports. 1. Chemoreceptor trigger zone

The chemoreceptor trigger zone CTZ , is an area of the medulla oblongata medulla that receives inputs from blood borne drug s or hormone s, and communicates with the vomiting center , to initiate vomiting . The CTZ is close to the area postrema on the floor of the fourth ventricle and is outside of the blood brain barrier . The neurotransmitter s implicated in the control of nausea and vomiting include acetylcholine , dopamine , histamine H 1 receptor , substance P NK 1 receptor , and serotonin 5 HT3 receptor . There are also opioid receptor s present, which may be involved in the mechanism by which opiate s cause nausea and vomiting. The blood brain barrier is not as developed here, and drugs such as dopamine which can normally not enter the CNS may still stimulate the CTZ. ref Miller AD, Leslie RA. 1. Parvocellular neurosecretory cell

distinguish Parvocellular cell Parvocellular neurosecretory cells are small neuron s within Paraventricular nucleus of hypothalamus paraventricular nucleus PVN of the hypothalamus . The axons of the parvocellular neurosecretory cells of the PVN project to the median eminence , at the base of the brain, where their neurosecretory nerve terminals release peptides into blood vessels in the hypothalamo pituitary portal system . The blood vessels carry the peptides to the anterior pituitary gland, where they regulate the secretion of hormones into the systemic circulation. Types The parvocellular neurosecretory cells include those that make Corticotropin releasing hormone CRH , which regulates ACTH secretion from the anterior pituitary gland Vasopressin , which also regulates ACTH secretion vasopressin and CRH act synergistically to stimulate ACTH secretion Thyrotropin releasing hormone TRH , which regulates TSH and prolactin secretion See also Magnocellular neurosecretory cell References reflist Unreferenced date April 2010 Diencephalon Category Neuroendocrine cells Category Neuroendocrinology Category Human cells ...   more details

  1. Neurochemistry

Neurochemistry is the specific study of neurochemical s, which include neurotransmitter s and other molecules such as neuro active drugs that influence neuron function. This principle closely examines the manner in which these neurochemicals influence the network of neural operation. This evolving area of neuroscience offers a neurochemist a micro macro connection between the analysis of organic compound s active in the nervous system and neural processes such as cortical plasticity , neurogenesis and Neural development neural differentiation . History The founding of neurochemistry as a discipline traces it origins to a series of International Neurochemical Symposia , of which the first symposium volume published in 1954 was titled Biochemistry of the Developing Nervous System . ref cite book last Siegel first George J. coauthors Albers, R.W., Brady, S.T., Price, D.L. title Basic Neurochemistry, 7th Ed. publisher Academic Press year 2006 isbn 0 12 088397 X ref These meetings led to the formation of the International Society for Neurochemistry and the American Society for Neurochemistry . These early gatherings discussed the tentative nature of possible neurotransmitter substances such as acetylcholine , histamine , substance P , and serotonin . By 1972, ideas were more concrete. Neurochemicals such as norepinephrine , dopamine , and serotonin were classified as putative neurotransmitters in certain neuronal tracts in the brain. Other circumventricular organs are the subfornical organ SFO and the area postrema in the brainstem . AV3V region The OVLT and the SFO are both strongly interconnected with the median preoptic nucleus of the hypothalamus the nucleus medianus , and together these three structures comprise the anterioventral third ventricle AV3V region the region anterior and ventral to the third ventricle. The AV3V region is very important in the regulation of fluid and electrolyte balance by controlling thirst, sodium excretion, blood volume regulation, and vasopressin secretion. Function The OVLT lacks a blood brain barrier , and so neurons in this region can respond to osmotic pressure factors that are present in the systemic circulation. ref cite book last Koeppen first Bruce M. title Berne & Levy Physiology 6th Edition Updated Edition year 2010 isbn 978 0 323 07362 2 pages 228 229 ref Some neurons in the OVLT are osmoreceptor s, being sensitive to the osmotic pressure of the blood. These neurons project to the supraoptic nucleus and paraventricular nucleus to regulate the activity of vasopressin secreting neurons. These neurons also project to the nucleus medianus also called the medial preoptic nucleus which is involved in controlling thirst .
