  1. The Elementary Forms of the Religious Life

sociology The Elementary Forms of the Religious Life lang fr Les formes l mentaires de la vie religieuse , published by French sociologist mile Durkheim in 1912, is a book that analyzes religion as a social phenomenon. Durkheim attributes the development of religion to the emotional security attained through communal living. According to Durkheim, early humans associated such feelings not only with one another, but with objects in their environment. This, Durkheim believed, led to the ascription of human sentiments and superhuman powers to these objects, in turn leading to totemism . The essence of religion, Durkheim finds, is the concept of the sacred , that being the only phenomenon which unites all religions. A religion, writes Durkheim, is a unified system of beliefs and practices relative to sacred things, that is to say, things set apart and forbidden beliefs and practices which unite into a single moral community called a Church, all those who adhere to them. ref name Swain http www.archive.org details elementaryformso00durk The Elementary Forms of the Religious Life 1915 Translated by Joseph Ward Swain, p. 62 ref In modern societies, the individual and individual rights evolve to become the new sacred phenomena, and hence these may be called religious for Durkheim. Durkheim examined religion using such examples as Pueblo Indian rain dancing rain dances , the religions of Australian Aborigines aboriginal tribes in Australia , and alcoholism alcoholic hallucination s. 1. List of desk forms and types

cleanup date June 2009 Any list of desk forms and types encountered in the modern office or home, and in Antiques antique stores, is incomplete and contradictory given the variations in the naming of desks, as a simple lookup in two or three of the reference books below will demonstrate. Each article discusses the name variations and the most general article of all, desk , makes comparisons between several forms and places them in historical context. The division between desk form and desk type presented here is arbitrary, since there is no consensus as how to differentiate function, form, type and style in these matters, as the books in the reference section below show. 1. Still Forms on Foxfield

Unreferenced date December 2006 Orphan date February 2009 Still Forms on Foxfield is a 1980 science fiction novel by Joan Slonczewski . It was her first novel. Plot summary The planet Foxfield is inhabited by people who left Earth on the brink of a Nuclear warfare nuclear war . After a century on their new planet, the inhabitants are contacted by people from Earth. Foxfielders are members of the Society of Friends , or Quakers, who have kept their faith while dwelling on a rather inhospitable planet. The Foxfielders survival was made possible only by the natives of Foxfield, the Commensals, who were initially assumed to be hostile, but whose chemical talents have made human survival on Foxfield possible. When Commensals finish their life span, they go to the jungle, to a mysterious structure known as the Dwelling, to add their body and mind to the collective consciousness, the One. Allison Thorne, a widow with a twelve year old son, David, who is in charge of the main settlement s technical center, is the one contacted by the Earth dwellers, United Nations Interplanetary. The UNI, who have been observing Foxfield secretly for years, are welcomed by the Foxfielders, who learn the history of the past century &mdash that the war occurred, but was not as bad as thought &mdash and begin to catch up on technology. Friction soon begins to develop between Foxfielders and the newcomers. Credometers, worn like wristwatches, are accepted by Foxfielders without realizing that doing so makes them irrevocably part of UNI. Aspects of UNI culture, such as majority voting and violent space games in which people are killed, shock the Foxfielders. The UNI representatives have difficulty in understanding the Foxfielders, not surprising given that religion in the UNI is reduced to preservation societies . 1. Dependent and independent verb forms

In the Goidelic languages , dependent and independent verb forms are distinct verb forms each tense of each verb exists in both forms. Verbs are often preceded by a grammatical particle particle which marks negation, or a question, or has some other force. For example, in Irish language Irish , the past tense of the verb lang ga feic to see has two forms the independent form lang ga chonaic and the dependent form lang ga faca . 1. Topological modular forms

In mathematics , the Spectrum homotopy theory spectrum of topological modular forms tmf describes a generalized cohomology theory whose Eilenberg Steenrod axioms coefficient ring is related to the graded ring of holomorphic modular forms with integral cusp expansions. Indeed, these two rings become isomorphic after inverting 6. tmf is constructed as the global sections of a sheaf mathematics sheaf of Highly structured ring spectrum E infinity ring spectra on the moduli stack of generalized elliptic curves . This theory has relations to the theory of modular forms in number theory , the homotopy groups of spheres , and conjectural Atiyah Singer index theorem index theories on loop space s of manifold s. tmf was first constructed by Michael J. Hopkins Mike Hopkins and Haynes Miller many of the computations can be found in preprints and articles by Paul Goerss, Mike Hopkins, Mark Mahowald, Haynes Miller, Charles Rezk, and Tilman Bauer. Construction The original construction of tmf uses the obstruction theory of Michael J. Hopkins Hopkins , Miller, and Paul Goerss, and is based on ideas of Dwyer, Kan, and Stover.
