The NewfoundlandAct was an Act of Parliament Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom that confirmed and gave effect to the Terms of Union agreed to between the then separate British Dominions Dominions of Canada and Dominion of NewfoundlandNewfoundland on March 23, 1949. It was originally titled the British North America Acts British North America Act.2C 1949 British North America Act 1949 , but was renamed in Canada on the patriation of the Canadian Constitution from the United Kingdom in 1982 . In exchange for Newfoundland becoming a province, the Canadian government took over the Newfoundland railway, Gander airport, public broadcasting, telegraph services and other services that fell under federal control. SS Newfoundland was a seal hunt sealing ship which lost 78 sealers on the ice during extreme weather conditions in March 1914 which claimed lives from three sealing ships in an event known as the 1914 Newfoundland Sealing Disaster. On March 30, 1914 the SS Newfoundland was jammed in the ice. The Captain, Wes Kean, could see signals from his father s ship, the SS Stephano SS Stephano , indicating that there were seals several miles away, and sent his crew in that direction to begin killing seals, under command of his first mate. As a storm began that afternoon, both the captain of the Newfoundland and the captain of the nearby Stephano thought that their respective crews were safely aboard the other man s vessel. Newfoundland s captain, believing that the men were aboard Stephano , did not blow the ship s whistle to signal his location which would have allowed his men to find the ship in the darkness and rain. The main display features a wide variety of mounted insects from around the world, organized by geographical region. One exhibit covers the insects of Newfoundland and Labrador . Live insects are dispersed around the mounted displays, including tarantulas , scorpions , and cockroach cockroaches . The museum also includes a glass beehive with live honeybees , a leafcutter ant colony, a recently extended convert 92 ft adj on butterfly house and a walking trail. The Newfoundland Insectarium was founded by Lloyd Hollett and Gary Holloway and opened in 1998. Lloyd Hollett is now the primary owner and director. Lloyd and his wife now run the Insectarium along with seasonal student empolyees from May to October yearly. It is located along Newfoundland and Labrador Route 430 Route 430 on the road to Gros Morne National Park , and as of July 1st, 2011 has received over 250,000 visitors. The building itself was formerly a dairy barn , and was originally built in 1946. The original cedar frame is still in place.
