The establishment of the Newlyn School was reminiscent of the Barbizon School in France, where artists fled Paris to paint in a more pure setting emphasizing natural light. These schools along with a related California movement were also known as En plein air . Newlyn had a number of things guaranteed to attract artists fantastic light, cheap living, and the availability of inexpensive models. The artists were fascinated by the fishermen s working life at sea and the everyday life in the harbour and nearby villages. Some paintings showed the hazards and Tragedy event tragedy of the community s life, for example, women anxiously looking out to sea as the boats go out, or a young woman crying as news of a disaster is heard. Background In the late 19th century the fishing port of Newlyn was home to one of the UK s largest fishing fleets, and was also the regular landing port for many other fishing vessels operating off the Cornish coast. At the time Newlyn was also the home to as many as five Methodist and Non Conformist religious groups, whose congregations included the local fishermen, most of whom practised a ban on fish being landed on the Sabbath in Christianity Sabbath . He worked in copper and his style is described as arts and crafts art nouveau . Together with Charles Robert Ashbee , he was a founding member of the Guild of Handicraft at Whitechapel , London in 1888. John Pearson was dismissed from the Guild of Handicraft in 1892 and made his way to Newlyn , Cornwall where he worked in the recently established industrial school. Pearson was greatly influenced by William De Morgan 1839 1917 and there is some evidence that he worked in some capacity at De Morgan s workshop decorating tiles and pottery and making associated metalwork, for example tile mounts. Perhaps the most notable examples of Pearson s work are the four large copper plaques, earth, air, fire and water, that decorate the facade of Newlyn Art Gallery . In addition to his time with De Morgan, as the senior metalworker at the Guild of Handicraft and at Newlyn, Pearson worked on his own account as a metalworker and decorating pottery.
