Life He was born in Barnton , Cheshire , was educated at Sir John Deane s College Sir John Deane s grammar school , Northwich and between 1943 to 1947 served in the British Army Royal Signals . After his military service he read modern history, economics and politics at the University of Manchester where he was to spend most of the rest of his working life as an academic lecturing and researching in the University s economics department. Albert Leeson worked for the firm W.E.Hill & Sons , starting as an apprentice in 1920 and quickly learning to making the finest fleur de lys bows mounted in silver, gold, or tortoiseshell . He was one of William C Retford s favorite pupils, he was quickly put to work on the finest bows and was eventually allowed to work totally unsupervised which was rare.
