Unreferenced auto yes date December 2009 The Nurse Matilda books were written by the British children s author Christianna Brand 1907&ndash 1988 and illustrated by her cousin, Edward Ardizzone . The books are based on stories told to the cousins by their grandfather. They concern a hideously ugly nursemaid known as Nurse Matilda who has been highly recommended to Mr. and Mrs. Brown by several agencies. Nurse Matilda arrives at the household of the Brown family and becomes a nanny to the innumerable Brown children. The Brown children are exceedingly naughty and frighten off many governesses in a wonderfully mischievous way&mdash until Nurse Matilda comes. She teaches the children to behave, and deals with the fearsome and persnickety Great Aunt Adelaide Stitch. In the end the children become good and decent, and Nurse Matilda leaves to attend another family of naughty children. In the sequels, the children revert back to their wicked ways, and the distressed Mr. and Mrs. Brown have no other choice but to send for Nurse Matilda again. She has also become a popular metaphor for the corrupting influence of power and authority in bureaucracy bureaucracies such as the mental institution in which the novel is set. In the novel and film Nurse Mildred Ratched is the head administrative nurse at the Salem, Oregon State Hospital, a mental institution where she exercises near absolute power over the patients access to medication s, privileges, and basic necessities such as food and toiletries. She capriciously revokes these privileges whenever a patient displeases her. The film opens with a combat scene in the summer of 1945, when the war becomes a million men old presumably the Battle of Okinawa one of the soldiers is show getting wounded and the scene goes woozy. The narrator notes This is the time for you to decide what you re gonna be a soldier that gets injured and dies, or a soldier that gets injured and lives. The GI soon realizes that he is no longer on the battlefield but in a hospital, and he is being taken care of by a familiar face, the army nurse. The film then commences a discussion of the army nurse s training and life during the war, beginning with basic training. The nurses had to go through the same basic training BT regiment as the soldiers, learning how to scale walls, survive in the wilderness, and set up a hospital in the bush. They are sent to where ever they are needed, whether at home or overseas. It they are overseas they live in much the same conditions as the soldiers they minister to, sleeping in GI cots, in GI tents, and were the same uniforms and helmets, which they find various practical uses for. They also take the same time out to go to USO shows. The film ends with a short statement from the head of the Army Nurses Service , asking the audience to buy war bond s.
