Council Regulation EEC No 2658 87 of 23 July 1987, creates the goods nomenclature called the Combined Nomenclature , or in abbreviated form CN , established to meet, at one and the same time, the requirements both of the Common Customs Tariff and of the external trade statistics of the European Union . The codes and the descriptions of goods established on the basis of the combined nomenclature shall replace those established on the basis of the nomenclatures of the Common Customs Tariff and the Nimexe. It is established on the basis of the harmonized system . The combined nomenclature shall comprise a the harmonized system nomenclature b Community subdivisions to that nomenclature, referred to as CN subheadings in those cases where a corresponding rate of duty is specified c preliminary provisions, additional section or chapter notes and footnotes relating to CN subheadings. Each CN subheading shall have an eight digit code number a the first six digits shall be the code numbers relating to the headings and subheadings of the harmonized system nomenclature b the seventh and eighth digits shall identify the CN subheadings The Commission established an integrated tariff, of the European Communities, referred to as the TARIC code , based on the combined nomenclature. The combined nomenclature, together with the rates of duty and other relevant charges, and the tariff measures included in the Taric or in other Community arrangements shall constitute the common customs tariff referred to in Article 9 of the Treaty, which shall be applied on the importation of goods into the Community Member States may insert subdivisions after the CN subheadings for national statistical purposes, and after the Taric subheadings for other national purposes. Open nomenclature involves the use of abbreviated Taxonomy taxonomic expressions in biological classification . Sfn Bengtson 1988 p 223 The most common expressions used are aff. , cf. , ? , and sp. . Although there can be variation in where researchers place expressions such as aff. and cf. in the Binomial nomenclature Latin name of a species , the way they are interpreted is the most significant unsettled issue. The International Code of Zoological Nomenclature ICZN does not make reference to open nomenclature, leaving its use and meaning open for interpretation by taxonomists. Sfn Bengtson 1988 p 224 The expression aff. is generally used to express affinity of a potentially new but undescribed species with a known species. Sfn Bengtson 1988 p 223 To indicate a potentially new species without showing affinity, sp. is used. This suggests that identification has either not been attempted or the specimen cannot be closely related to established species or subspecies. Priority is a fundamental principle of modern botanical nomenclature and zoological nomenclature . Essentially, it is the principle of recognising the first valid application of a name to a plant or animal. There are two aspects to this The first valid name given to a plant or animal shall be accepted as the organism s name. Once a name has been used, no subsequent publication of that name shall be valid. In both cases there are formal provisions for making exceptions to this principle. If an archaic or obscure prior name is discovered for an established taxon, the current name can be declared a nomen conservandum botany or conserved name zoology , and so conserved against the prior name. Similarly, if the current name for a taxon is found to have an archaic or obscure prior homonym botany homonym , the current name can be declared a nomen protectum . The principle of priority has not always been in place. When Carl Linnaeus laid the foundations of modern botanical nomenclature, he offered no recognition of prior names. The botanists who followed him were just as willing to overturn Linnaeus s names. The first sign of recognition of priority came in 1813, when A. P. de Candolle laid out some principles of good nomenclatural practice. He favoured retaining prior names, but let wide scope for overturning poor prior names. During the 19th century, the principle gradually came to be accepted by almost all botanists, but debate continued to rage over the conditions under which the principle might be ignored. Botanists on one side of the debate argued that priority should be universal ... efforts, however, were so disruptive of the nomenclature that they appear to have benefited his opponents ... year 1991 title A history of botanical nomenclature journal Annals of the Missouri Botanical Garden volume 78 pages 33 56 doi 10.2307 2399589 Category Botanical nomenclature Category Zoological nomenclature ... more details

for guidelines on the use of Stock nomenclature in Wikipedia articles Wikipedia Naming conventions chemistry Use of Stock nomenclature Stock nomenclature for inorganic compound s is a widely used system of chemical nomenclature developed by the German chemist Alfred Stock and first published in 1919. In the Stock system , the oxidation state s of some or all the elements in a compound are indicated in Bracket Parentheses .28 .29 parentheses by Roman numeral s. ref Clugston&Flemming pages 214 215 ref ref Housecroft3rd page 213 ref Style Contrary to the usual English style for parentheses, there is no space between the end of the element name and the opening parenthesis for Silver I fluoride AgF , the correct style is silver I fluoride not silver I fluoride . Where there is no ambiguity about the oxidation state of an element in a compound, it is not necessary to indicate it with Roman numerals hence for Sodium chloride NaCl , sodium chloride will suffice sodium I chloride I is unnecessarily long and such usage is very rare. Unreferenced date January 2007 Retroactive nomenclature is the telling of the earlier history of a person, place or thing while referring to said person, place or thing by a name that came into use at a later date. Examples Names One easily understandable example of retroactive nomenclature is the tradition in many countries that a woman adopts the surname of the man she marries while remembering her maiden name as the way she was referred to her pre marital days. Radio talk show host Michael Medved once made the statement Hillary Clinton used to be Conservatism conservative when I knew her in our college days. But in Hillary Rodham s college days she was not yet married to Bill Clinton therefore there was no Hillary Clinton at that time. However, such a case as this is easily understood that he meant the woman who later became known as Hillary Clinton. Similarly, the events of a future monarch s life are often recounted with the regnal name, as in Queen Victoria was born in 1819. Princess Alexandrina Victoria of Kent was born in 1819 and became queen in 1837. Emperors of China Chinese emperors are posthumously given temple names , used in most references to emperors from the Han Dynasty Han to the Ming Dynasty . Most of these are agreed upon posthumously. When people today read ancient histories, confusion sometimes results from the fact that in earlier ages historical characters changed their names more often than is common for people to do today, and ancient historians often told earlier stories using later names. It is possible that King David s name during his boyhood and youth was Elhanan , and his father Jesse , likewise, had the earlier names of Jaare Oregim and Jair. Although he was not known as David until later, one Biblical account 1 Samuel chapter 17 tells the story of his slaying the Philistine giant Goliath , while still calling him David. In 2 Samuel 21 19 he is called Elhanan. Other Jew originally meant a person from the nation of Kingdom of Judah Judah ... more details
Standard battery nomenclature describes portable dry cell batteries that have physical dimensions and electrical characteristics interchangeable between manufacturers. The long history of disposable dry cells means that many different manufacturer specific and national standards were used to designate sizes, long before international standards were reached. Technical standards for battery sizes and types are set by standards organization s such as International Electrotechnical Commission IEC and American National Standards Institute ANSI . Popular sizes are still referred to by old standard or manufacturer designations, and some non systematic designations have been included in current international standards due to wide use.
